What about GFWL?
As from what i recall. this title demanded the use of the obnoxious PoS DRM GFWL, seing how that is now dead (thank god) how does this affect the steam version of this title?

Is it going to be added as a steamworks game or? perhaps they had already patched away the gfwl abomination? i have an old copy from gfwl store i belive, is that 100% useless or can i do something with it still?

AoE III multiplayer does not require GFWL. Both the disc and Steam versions still use the ESO servers.

Singleplayer doesn't require any internet connectivity whatsoever. You can play it completely offline.

GFW =/= GFWL

I have the disc version (non-steam) and it has never ever required GFWL. I have a copy of vanilla AoE3 on the original CDs (3 CDs lol, but you only need 2 of them for installation), an original TAD expansion on CD, and also a DVD with the complete edition (which includes TWC).

It's a typical "internet-optional" game, so you just install the game and then you're ready to go, no need for extra programs or anything. There isn't even any online activation, unless you go on ESO for multiplayer.

With the latest patch you don't even need the CD in the drive to play.

How did the myth that this game required GFWL get started though? I was hesitant to buy it because I thought it did it too. It seems to be a very common misconception.
Maybe because it is made by MIcrosoft? IDK ...

Most likely a branding issue. I believe the boxed copy has "Games for Windows" on the top, which some people may mistake for "Games for Windows LIVE".

What about if you bought it through GFWL ?

For those who bought either the disc, or the digital copy, from Xbox.com , you are essentially screwed.

In both cases, the installer uses an activation key that is 25 digits long and then uses server authentication to retrieve the individual game keys associated with the key that was entered.

If you purchased the digital version and DO NOT have the CAB files downloaded, you are screwed.

If you have the CDs or the CAB files, then you need to click "setup.exe", "setupX.exe" and "setupY.exe" instead of "auto run.exe"

Once the game and both expansions are installed, find game keys online.

(You won't be able to play multiplayer, unless you already have an ESO account. Because only 1 ESO account can be linked to a key)

As a heads up:

Age of Empires Support: can not help you with installation, contact vendor (xbox.com in my case)

Xbox.com: no longer offers support for legacy titles. Nor can they offer support for purchases made prior to 2015. (A "database corruption" made all purchases before 2015 disappear) contact the publisher for further assistance:

Microsoft (Games Studio) Support: we do not have any record of your purchase. The PayPal order number is not in our system. For further assistance, please contact Ensemble Studios.

And that's where I'm stuck.
