Chornobyl Liquidators had a pretty strong start with an interesting angle: what would it be like to have been one of the members of the rescue crew during the Chernobyl disaster? The atmosphere was on point, the dialogue and voiceovers, while clearly working off translation, seemed alright... then, the back half of this game happened, and I felt like the momentum the game started with had withered away. What the game ended up being was a half-baked task management simulator that tried to pay homage to one of the worst man-made disasters of our lifetime, and sort of just ...ended. I believe there was an idea for something interesting here, and perhaps it got a little too big for its britches. There were also a few points in the game where I managed to softlock myself out of progression, which is a huge problem. In the end, Chornobyl Liquidators was a good-looking game that I grew tired of enduring halfway through, and in some ways it felt like the game grew tired of itself.

I had this game in my wishlist for maybe 2 to 3 years, and I was very excited when I heard the announcement that it was coming out. I have a big interest in Chernobyl and when I saw the trailer and the pictures it looked promising. I bought the game when it came out and it had its negative reviews, but it also had promise, so I waited.

Playing the game a few months later after release I was expecting a lot of positive changes, but unfortunately after completing the game I wasn't very pleased. It did not meet my expectations and in some parts of the game did not make sense for the time period of 1986. Also some parts of the story telling felt like it was missing voice overs and even subtitles. It was little things like that which kept adding on.

Now I want to say that the game isn't too bad. The story is interesting and unique in its own way. Graphics aren't too bad, there are moments where you look around and everything looks great, but there are also moments where areas needs some more work. Additionally some game mechanics were really annoying (putting out fires at the end of the game took too long, doors closing when you go near them, random noises that did not correspond to the action of the player etc...). I can go on, but in my opinion, there are other reviews that have explained it much better then I can, and in much greater detail.

I want to also mention that I am not a game designer or anything of the sort. I am just a guy who enjoys playing videos games, so please keep that in mind.

To the developers of the game. I think you have something good here, but it is far from great. I don't know what happened here, and why the game went in the direction it did, but I think if you continue working on it, you will get much better results. I wish you luck.
