Welcome to the March 2025 Coral Island development update!

This blog will showcase some of the exciting things Stairway Games has been working on, including the upcoming 1.2 update, "Multiplayer and Romance."

2025 Roadmap

1.2 Update Overview

We’re making amazing progress on the 1.2 update, and currently, we are wrapping up key features. This update is one of our biggest yet, with over 100,000 words of new text localized into multiple languages.

Alongside all the exciting new content, we’re also fixing bugs at a record pace to ensure everything runs smoothly. Final testing is just around the corner, and we can’t wait to share the update with you soon!

Multiplayer

Get ready to experience Coral Island with friends!

The team has been hard at work, and thanks to your helpful feedback (and willingness to break the game!), we’ve fixed over 500 bugs related to Multiplayer alone. Here are a few highlights of what’s in store:

Co-op Fieldwork: Team up to share resources and daily chores!

Co-op Farming: Expand your farm, grow crops together, and build bigger barns.

Co-op Exploration: Dive into the ocean, brave the mines, and uncover secrets in the Cave of Memorie together!

Co-op Rivalries: Compete in friendly challenges and see who’s the ultimate farmer.

Co-op Marriage: Take your in-game relationships to the next level with multiplayer marriage!

Revamped Romance Progression

We’re making romance on Coral Island more engaging and meaningful, giving your relationships with dateable characters new depth and progression. Here’s what’s changing:

New Progression: We’re introducing a heart-locking system to add more depth to relationships. Check out the media below for a simple breakdown of how to unlock hearts and progress with your favorite islanders! Start the game with access to Hearts 0–5 right away.

Before you can start dating:

Give a locket as a symbol of commitment.
Join their hangout cutscenes to get to know them better before taking the next step.

Building relationships takes time, and we want every step to feel special!

Hangout Events: Spend quality time with your favorite islanders through optional mini-events. Whether it’s a cozy picnic, a jam session, or a spontaneous beach bonfire, these events let you share special moments with NPCs.

Hangout Cutscenes: Hangout events trigger unique cutscenes, focusing on your bond with an NPC. These are separate from Heart Events and offer even more one-on-one time.

How to Access: The revamped romance system unlocks at Heart Level 2, and you’ll see a prompt in the Relationship UI whenever a hangout event is available.

New Relationship Detail Tab: Easily track hangout progress, gift preferences, and key moments in the brand-new interface.

Heart Events 11-15

Marriage Is Just the Beginning!

At Heart Level 12, you’ll unlock post-marriage events that explore life beyond the wedding. Here’s what to expect:

Deeper Conversations: Discover new dialogue that reveals your spouse’s dreams, fears, and personal aspirations.

Special Cutscenes: Share meaningful moments in daily life, from quiet mornings together to romantic dates that bring you closer.

Spooky Outfits

All dateable characters will be getting their own Spooky Outfit just in time for the Spooky Festival! These outfits will appear every Fall season.

You might also spot them during special ghost-story events—but only if your friendship with certain NPCs is close enough! We also plan to have the kids wear costumes in a future update.

We’re keeping the full lineup a secret for now because we want you to experience it in-game for maximum immersion. But here’s a sneak peek at what’s in store…

Asset Updates

Winter is coming—literally!

Our team has given the island a frosty makeover! We’re shoveling extra snow off crops, buildings, and roads—while letting a little snow pile up on the forgotten ones for that extra cozy, wintry touch.

Nintendo Switch

Regarding Switch news, we don't have any updates yet. Discussions are still ongoing. But don’t worry, as soon as we’ve got something to share, we will! We're just as eager as you all are to get this resolved!

What's Next

We’re nearing the finish line for the 1.2 update! Once we wrap up QA, bug fixing, and finalize localization, we’ll share the official release date. After that, the Coral Island devs will shift focus to the 1.3 update, which will bring:

Growing kids
A Haunted House minigame at the Spooky Festival
New minigames at the Recreation Center
Merfolk Festival
And more!

🎮 Controller-only Bugfix:

Fixed Y button rebinding issue due to overlap with Restore Default command.
Fixed character preview and cart behavior in White Flamingo.
Fixed hangout location always defaults to the second option when selecting.

💭 Text and Dialogue:

Fixed some NPCs repeating dialogue about completed murals, museum fish collection, unlocked attractions, and the big tree being healed in certain save files.
Fixed Aging Barrel text in Jeff Smith's letter to correctly show it as a claimable item instead of a blueprint upon reaching Advanced Farmer.
Fixed various minor NPC dialogue issues.
Fixed various localization issues.

🪄 Improvements:

Added information in the Relationship tab about Sam's 2-Heart Event being unavailable on certain days.
Updated Treasure Bubbles and Recycling Center UI text to Insert Crops and Insert Trash, respectively.
Removed the shocked emoji SFX when interacting with NPCs.
Enabled certain NPCs' Heart Events to trigger year-round:
- Chaem: 7b, 8, 8b, 10
- Eva: 8a
- Leah: 6b
- Luke: 2c
- Macy: 6, 8, 10 (10 available only on Spring, Summer, Fall)
- Suki: 2, 4, 6, 8a
- Theo: 3, 8
- Wakuu: 2, 5, 8

Hi Farmers,

This hotfix addresses the crashes because of upgrading barn or coop to level 3, along with other issues.

Bug Fixes:

Fixed crash when an invalid item is placed inside a shed.
Fixed the issue where Fruit Tree saplings disappeared when the season changed after reloading or restarting the game.
Fixed Mark sometimes having an empty dialogue.
Fixed bug where upgrading a coop or barn to level 3 incorrectly could cause a crash. If you've already upgraded, this update will revert your coop or barn back to level 2.

This hotfix addresses several issues in the game, with the most notable fixes being achievements not triggering in-game and on Steam, crashes during the Winter Fair Trivia, and crashes that occurred when playing with New Game+/Early Access save files. Additionally, it resolves various other issues to improve overall gameplay stability.

Bugfixes:

Fixed achievements not triggering in-game and on Steam, including Legendary Farmer, Healing the Ocean, Healing the World, Social Butterfly, Memento of the Past, Paleontologist, Bug Enjoyer, Fishing Mania, Marine Observer, and Part-Time Curator.
Fixed player falling through the floor every time after passing out the previous day.
Fixed game freezing when opening the recipe book.
Fixed crash that occurred upon completing House Level 3 upgrades if a decor item was placed in front of the house stairs.
Fixed crash when upgrading seeds in the Oracle Chamber.
Fixed crash when playing Winter Fair Trivia until the day changed.
Fixed crash when opening save file in some rare cases caused by invalid furniture.
Fixed crash occurring after sleeping on Beach Festival day in certain cases.
Fixed crash after using explosives in the Cave of Memories and jumping into the hole.
Fixed crash that occurred when playing with New Game+/Early Access save file.

This is a major hotfix we’re releasing before our team goes on holiday. The key updates include the addition of season-specific background music and background images for the end-of-day UI. We’ve also made further optimizations to enhance the game’s performance.

Bug Fixes:

Fixed some book lists in Sections C and D always being marked as "New" even after reading.
Fixed the player wearing underwater suits during cutscenes on land.
Fixed missing SFX for the two-legged player tail when underwater.
Fixed a bug where the player could receive Goddess Blessing from the Enchantment site.
Fixed player pointer going out of bounds on the map when entering the shed.
Fixed player pointer still being visible when entering buildings or caverns.
Fixed a visual bug when tilling clover.
Fixed character getting stuck when starting fishing with certain behaviors.
Hide NPC birthdays you haven’t met from the end-of-day UI.
Fixed Lanin shopkeeper portrait being empty in seasons other than Spring; now uses her Spring portrait instead.

Text and Dialogue:

Fixed various minor NPC dialogue issues.
Fixed various typos in cutscenes.
Fixed various localization issues.
Simplified the flow of the "One of Us" cutscenes.
Updated Paul’s Relationship UI information.

Improvements:

Disabled cursor hover over disabled inventory slots when using a controller.
Optimized loading for various game areas.
Removed unused keybind ("Open Inventory Decor") from the settings.

Balancing:

Updated the minimum requirement for large log farms to a silver axe.

Hi Farmers,

This hotfix addresses game performance optimizations for the Steam Deck and resolves some edge-case crashes in the game.

Bug Fixes:

Fixed freezes during the Semeru wedding event on the Steam Deck. The previous fix missed some scenarios.
Fixed freezes during the unwanted guest cutscene on the Steam Deck.
Fixed an issue where the UI would disappear after interacting with the rename panel.
Fixed a bug that made floating resources unpickable in certain cases.
Fixed the ability to open the pause menu while fishing, this shouldn't be possible.
Fixed missing fishing animations during fishing.
Fixed a crash when moving the underwater barn to a location occupied by a chest or a machine with active temperature.
Fixed a crash when moving the underwater barn building.
Fixed a crash when sleeping or saving after upgrading the barn to level 2.

Improvements:

Reduced freezes occurring at 12:00, 16:00, and 18:00 in-game when playing on the Steam Deck.
IOstore has been disabled, allowing the game to be modded again. Due to this change, the hotfix is larger in size than usual, as you will need to redownload some files. This won't increase the game's size on your computer.

Hi Farmers,

More hotfixes to address some high-priority issues from our last update:

Bugfixes:

Fixed an issue with our dynamic dialogue system where older dynamic dialogues were running when they shouldn't.
Fixed an issue where dynamic dialogues after festivals and town rank increases were not triggering.
Fixed a wedding cutscene issue causing a black screen and preventing progression.
Fixed an issue where legendary fish could be caught using a fish net.
Fixed a crash when upgrading a house to level 3.
Fixed an issue where the shop panel does not appear to choose a tail after the One of Us cutscene.
Fixed incorrect incomplete items for some offerings in the Temple.
Fixed Steam achievements not registering. We have fixed almost all achievements issues except the following sometimes won't unlock: Gulliver's Voyage, Undersea Mystery, Darkest Cavern. Don't worry, we will fix that in the next hotfix.
Fixed background music not playing in the "Bonk the Skeleton" mini-game.

Localizations:

Fixed various issues with translations.

Thank you so much for your feedback and reports. We really appreciate it. We apologize that this update is a bit buggy because of the preparation of the save files for the next multiplayer update. As always, we'll keep on making Coral Island better.
