What an odd little game.

The actual gameplay is solid, although VERY limited. You just dismantle ships in a space dry-dock (even though they're all dry but you know what I mean) and try to work off a debt imposed on you by the Evil Capitalist Megacorp Lynx.

At least, that's what it used to be. Then a story got added.
And honestly, it's not a great story. It's a generic, "We need to stand up to our rights!" type story, which I'm 100% here for normally. However, the way it's presented is less of a game storyline and more of an audio drama where you can do pretty much nothing to actually interact or make a meaningful impact. The game even incentivises you to continue doing your job perfectly by tying progression perks to how well you break down the ship; so the whole idea of being "against the corp" dissolves because I'm still earning them money hand over fist.

And it's a shame, because pre-story the weight of the debt on your shoulders, the fact that you are just cloned and popped back out when you die, and the machine voice constantly talking about you like a tool that could be replaced was more than enough to spell out that this was a despotic, near-slave labour camp that only cared about $$ and not the actual people working there. It didn't need a half-baked resistance ring, what it needed was more ships to break and more subtle storytelling that allows players to form their own opinion on things, rather than being told what you should think.

Awesome relaxing game that is an easy way to relax and switch off.

"just 15 minutes" - me circa 2024, lying to myself. 23/10 highly recommended.

Maybe if the devs listened and allowed you to skip the terrible, union-pandering stuff, this would be better. But the fact you are expected to sit there and listen while they rant about things you don't care about without a way to skip it is ridiculous to me.

I want to play fun spaceship-salvaging game, not be told all about how company bad, union good.

Hardspace: Shipbreaker is like Power Wash Simulator in space. Overall very fun and satisfying, but can get kinda repetitive. Thats what you get out of a game like this though.
