But how without it getting killed by the thorns?

If I recall correctly, there's a few ways you can do this one. I think you can ride the whale up the waterfall, but when you're near the top, you can throw the fish to the right to the other pool. Since it is larger, it won't die by the thorns. Let me know if this works. It's been a while since I've done this level.

That's it. The tricky part is, you have to quickly stop time just after jumping out the orca because you can't stop time while on the whale.
