In VR this is really great! it's like you are really flying the plane. The possibilities in Microsoft Flight Simulator are endless

Takes forever to download

Takes a long time to load, and 150 GB of free space. But, if you finally get it to open, it is pretty good, but my computer still lags. Just make sure you can run it first

With MSFS2024 right around the corner, I think now would be a good time for me to review this sim. It is by far one of the most technological advanced simulators to date and the amount of work put behind it to look and function as it does is amazing.

Before this I was playing FSX on my low-end laptop and accumulated about 600 hours thinking there wouldn't be another flight sim and it's the end for the series until E3 2019 where it was revealed and me lose it. The sim came out but I didn't play it until late 2021 when I built my first PC and it being the first game I ran on it. The download screen was atrocious waiting for the download with slow speeds from the servers. It took a fair amount of my playtime. But after it was done, the experience was easy to get it. It felt very different from FSX and I had to familiarize myself with the new system.

Graphics are definitely top notch and with some filters can look real sometimes. Scenery is based on bing maps, so i have noticed errors in scenery such as pink textures and low resolution. On the sim side of scenery, my only complaint is auto generated building as they don't look so great. However, the sim still look great even on high or medium. Performance is a mixed bag, at 1440p with a 5600X and RTX 3070 I get about 40FPS average on Ultra and some high settings in the mix. In cities like New York, framerate drops a ton but I have noticed since release of the sim these have been improved overtime. Handling of the aircraft I can't say for sure if it is accurate to real life for all, but having flown the C172 irl it feels pretty good in the sim except for ground handling which doesn't steer properly. I was in the 2024 tech alpha and they have improved this thankfully. You can adjust almost anything the plane has to offer for controls so the customizablilty is great.

One of my favorite parts about the sim is the passion from the developers AND the community as there are tons of mods free and paid that make the experience more immersive from scenery to aircraft to effects. In some cases of the sim, Asobo walks so the community can run and they've taken this to heart by officially working with teams to implement their systems in the sim. This especially goes for avionics and functions of base aircraft that are lackluster in what they can do.

An immersive thing that comes with the sim is VR, and using it on the Quest 2 has been a mixed experience. Performance is only good on Virtual Desktop and nothing else. Not quest link or steam vr. Even with VD, performance isn't the best as I get either low frame rate or stuttering. I have to lower to the near lowest settings for good performance which doesnt look too great. If you plan on doing VR a lot, I recommend the ideal requirements for the best experience, but it is still playable on lower.

With all things said, 2024 is looking to be even greater than this and feels like a whole new simulator after I played it. I cannot say much about it since it is not out yet, but I definitely recommend this simulator whether you like aviation, traveling, having a game to relax with or all.
