if I do that, it says "failed to initialize steamworks. the application cannot continue launching"
... any ideas?
oh and I run Avira... not Avast. But still, if I start the game the usual way, it says there is a potential threat and wants to reboot,.. which I did... also I reinstalled the game

Avira also blocks it (why?) also the same thing happens to me. I get the failed to initialize steamworks error when i try to run it straight from the file

I do not know why, I have been trying different things, like reinstalling, deleting every related folder and so on... when I tried running the game through the "symphonyofwar.exe", it just didnt start at all showing some error message.
I (dont know why) then tried to start it through the desktop icon again and it worked...

I might try that out. Avira has this thing where you can disable it for 10 mins and I had to do that to start the game. Once the game starts it doesn't matter, but yeah it would suck to have to do that every time.

it works for me all the time now, without having to do anything more...
if I find out why that is, I will post it here... good luck!

how to fix problems with Avast :

remove Avast from your computer and don't ever download it again.
Avast sux now.
ironically, some components of the program are impossible to remove without a special tool, of which you can get that tool from the devs of avast. .because i guess they know people might want to remove it.

Yeah I was considering unpinning this because literally who still uses it, but I guess I'll leave it up just in case.

i agree, it's good info. there likely are still people who use it. I was trying to be funny. .while also being serious. .like seriously, don't use Avast, lol.
nowadays, avast is borderline malware

I've been having issues with starting the game and i don't have the avast software on my computer it just gives me an error message that prevents the game from loading. It didn't occur during the first start up only after i signed off the game and steam for a few hours before getting back on. does anyone know of a way to fix this issue? to clarify the error is tied to this "Open-AL Device" making it impossible to start up the game.

This is the case for 'every' AV. If you have an AV that does not require an external tool to remove, you should be vary of using it (as it is not providing you sufficient protections).

I'm using Avast - be it good or bad - it doesn't seem to block the game, but if it did: You can add files as an exception easily.
