Edit: Apparently the problem was with my steam installation or recent OS updates. After i switched my steam version to flatpak the game started up as intended and also several problems with other games (mostly proton) disappeared.


The game doesn't start when i click on "Play" in my library. Thanks to the absence of any DRM/copy protection i can simply start the game from command line by simply typing ./openttd in its directory.
So this isn't urgent but i would like to know what could be the reason for this so i can fix it and start the game the easy way by simply pressing "Play" in my library.
