If a game supports it, it's awesome! Any game benefits in my opinion.
As for this one, I have no idea, but I imagine it might be locked to a 4:3 ratio for gameplay reasons.
That's just an edge-case of having an ultrawide. I play mostly singleplayer/coop games and it honestly enhances the experience a lot!
For example, Aliens: Fireteam Elite. I played that game on a 4:3 resolution, it was good. Once I switched to the ultrawide, WOW. I was blown away by how much more immersive it was. Sure, there's a bit of distortion on the sides, but you never notice that. Just like you don't notice the lack of focus in your peripheral vision. You just focus in the middle and everything else adds to the experiense.
It adds a ton of immersion. I describe it to people as the closest thing to VR without having to strap on a headset. Having the game cover your entire field of view really elevates games like Alan Wake II or Subnautica, as a couple examples that support it.
I have not played many multiplayer shooters in 32:9 but you do have a very slight peripheral vision advantage, yes.
What exactly is the problem? From my armchair it looks like it should already work by just widening the viewport?
Something like Monsterworld, which has superb ultrawide support.
That said; top-down games, especially, can be tough to make work if there's a set viewpoint, or levels are designed to fit a certain ratio.
I'd welcome support, but it's pretty low on my list. Hard to be upset with small devs going with the most common aspect ratio <3
