The game starts out incredible and exciting, but then it nosedives so hard for me personally.

The story isn't great, it's not bad either. Generic bad guy hellbent on becoming powerful and conquering every nation. There's a LOT of characters, but they're all actually pretty unique in terms of dialogue and presentation. The pacing isn't too bad either. Traveling around and backtracking to check on new characters is a chore and a pain until you unlock fast travel halfway into the game.

The music is AMAZING and I absolutely love it, which is to be expected with Motoi Sakuraba and Michiko Naruke. They really set the mood for each town, dungeon, fight and scene.

My biggest gripe with the game comes in two forms. There's so many characters: some are great, some are terrible, and the rest are mediocre. Some characters are literally a pain in the ass to recruit, and they turn out to be the most terrible characters so the pay off isn't there at all. Some characters are good when you first recruit them, but fall off later. Some are terrible, but really spike in performance *much* later. The others are either mediocre, or just flat out terrible.

My other gripe with the game is magic. It's useless for 2/3 of the game, existing only to heal and buff your allies. My casters do triple the damage their spells would inflict, which is incredibly hefty in MP cost as well. There's not a lot of variety in magic either, with most of them being buffs or heals. AoE tickles the enemies, and single targets just isn't worth the MP cost when your auto attack can do triple its damage. From what I've gathered, magic doesn't become useful until late game and seeing how I'm nearing the end of the game and magic is only just starting to become useful, it just leaves a really poor taste in my mouth. I love magic, and it's an afterthought in this game.

Also I really, really hate the mini-games in this. They're either buggy and incredibly frustrating, or just a button masher which tires me out in my old age. None of them are fun at all, yet you need to push through a lot of them to recruit some characters.

If you don't mind spending the majority of your battles simply auto attacking and healing, occasionally using skills, with a generic story, a plethora of characters where some are good, some are terrible, and the rest are mediocre, and great music, then this game is for you. If you enjoy having variety in your party like magic and a lot of characters that have their uses, I'm sorry to say this game isn't going to do much for you.

I like the gameplay, but I never really want to play for long because the localization is TERRIBLE. The worst, most annoying character in the game is one of the primary story characters, so she has to be in your party whether you like it or not -- you cannot ditch her completely. You can make her a noncombat character, but she still talks ... and talks ... and never shuts up ... and everything she says makes you want to feed her to the next monster.
