Allow gnome desktop environment
I'm really not a big fan of kde and I heavily prefer gnome apps.

That's also my case. I was hoping that, once Valve releases SteamOS, someone can create some sort of Gnome-centric spin where Gaming Mode works the same but Desktop Mode uses Gnome.

Is that even possible?

It's running Arch so you should be able to install Gnome or whatever desktop environment you want if you'd like. You may have to reinstall it after an OS update though, I'm not sure. The apps themselves shouldn't care which you use, but if you install a Gnome app it will probably have to install more dependencies for it. I'd be fine with them allowing a choice as long as they don't change the default. Gnome is too Mac-like for my taste.

that read-only root gonna make it pretty hard to have SteamOS use GNOME probably. Sadly the only choice you have is to install another Linux distro that can use GNOME but as of right now the internal audio drivers aren't upstreamed to the kernel yet I think... Plus you lose a lot of the cool stuff SteamOS has like the Quick Access Menu

SteamOS updates quite often (couple updates a week), and most of them are pretty important bug fixes. I don't wanna have to reinstall gnome and set it up that often. Reason I mentioned gnome apps is cause I like consistency. And I like gnome's layout, the design, and their app principles (simple by default).

Gnome 40+ also introduced lots of additions to gnome. And in general I just desktop's and the app's look and feel much more than kde. It looks much cleaner and much more modern. And in general, the gnome shell and applications tends to be more refined than kde.

Really hoping once they open source steam os, someone make a gnome flavour for it cause that'd be sick.

I think Gnome would be much better suited here. Touch in mind, simpler (in a console / touch first setting a good idea). Hope they give us a choice if not switching completely.

Late post but I agree, I wish we had the option to use GNOME by default. It's better suited for touchscreens as that of the Deck, is, imo, more beautiful, and, again imho, its workflow is clearly superior to that of KDE. I know theoretically we can always install it ourselves, but having to do so again with every system update makes this unviable.

As a blatantly unabashed KDE fanboy, I'm pleased with the interface as-is. I also believe in freedom of choice though, so I sincerely hope you all get the Gnome based SteamOS you desire, even if it is an unofficial offshoot.

Sadly you can't install that on the base model 😓

KDE mobile is also touch friendly DE. The UI is probably better than Gnome for tablets.

Right now, the project have nasty bugs right now. I hope they fix their worst bugs within 5 years.

I too love KDE. But for a console it's overkill in my opinion. Especially when it comes to rather inexperienced users.

I'd think KDE would be better for inexperienced users because, especially if they're using Steam, they're most likely coming from Windows and KDE is much more similar to WIndows than Gnome is.

Nowadays more people use Smartphones and tablets in a daily basis than PCs. GNOME might be better suited in that regard. But the best would be to be able to choose.

GNOME is actually a bad tablet/mobile OS. LIbrem made PHOSH because Gnome is a desktop DE only. It turn out you do not want floating windows for mobile OS. You are inviting finger pain.

The main problem with the GNOME as the gaming DE is lack of wayland tearing protocol Implementation and as result increased input lag, more stutters etc. KDE don't have such issues. I like and use GNOME daily, but as gaming DE it's really bad. I use openbox session for gaming.
