So yes, it's a remake. I know some people hate the remakes trend, but having missed that game when it released, i'm glad i'm being able to experience it in a modernized version.

Overall, i really enjoyed it. Of course as you probably guessed, it's not for you if don't like scary games. Being used to them, i didn't find it terrifying but there are definitely some tense moments and a few good jumpscares. Everything in the game's atmosphere screams Alien: from the eerie sounds and music to the story, even if the creatures obviously aren't the same. The story is solid and even if it's nothing revolutionnary, it definitely kept me wanting to know more and surprised me a few times.

The visuals are nice, the game probably has the best looking explosions and flame effects i've seen in quite some time.

The character feels a bit 'heavy'. At times it's good because it allows you to really feel through its moves and the controller rumbles the violence and impacts from the fights, but i gotta say i sometimes wished that the controls were a bit more responsive. Overall, it's still good in that department.

I put 20 hours to finish in difficult mode and while it might sound on the short side, content is dense enough that i didn't feel the game would have needed more. Plus, it has some replay value through NG+ and achievement hunting if you're into this.

Recommended, too bad EA hasn't been happy with the sales, because i would have loved episodes 2 and 3 remakes.

The original Dead Space was (and remains) an incredibly special game. As far as gameplay and story went, it didn't seem very ambitious on the surface; it was a standard third-person shooter with environment puzzles and visceral combat wrapped in a typical sci-fi horror story. Yes, it brought its own gimmicks to the table, but it brought so much more such that many modern game designs are undeniably a part of Visceral's legacy, whether they know it or not. As such, it is one of my all-time favorite games and I have replayed it several times and it blows my mind that Visceral doesn't exist anymore. Suffice to say that Motive's version has a lot to live up to.

So let's get it out of the way - Motive has done a fine job... YET something just feels a teensy bit off, but not so much that the game doesn't work out. It works out just fine. With source material this strong, it'd be difficult to ♥♥♥♥ it up. Well, that's not true at all; the potential to ♥♥♥♥ things up - especially given Motive's parent company - was extremely high. And who are Motive anyway? Some shady EA company for poaching Canadian Ubisoft talent or something, I dunno, but hell if that didn't worry me just a little bit. However, it all worked out so if you've never played the original and just can't stand its archaic design (sarcasm), or you're a big fan and just need another reason to gore everything aboard the Ishimura again, then you can safely do so and not expect any massive form of disappointment; the remake is very capable.

But capable is about as good as it gets in my opinion and I am fully aware that my opinion is not shared by the majority of people out there. So with that in mind, you should know that what follows are the observations of a curmudgeon who generally abhors remakes and nostalgia mining, but keeps getting suckered into diving into the deep end. RE2 was fantastic, RE3 was disappointing. Dead Space is... unnecessary. It's good, but unnecessary.

I say this because it doesn't stray very far from anything Visceral did and in my eyes, the original still holds up. Yes, there's a 15-year gap between the games and I suppose to some people that seems like a very long time, but the things I appreciated most about the original that were bold and daring are just kinda here because there's no reason to change any of it. And what changes Motive brought to the table other than the obvious face-lift didn't really improve the game; they just kinda exist, albeit one I'll speak about below is debatable. To be fair, they didn't ruin the game, either, so there's that.

So let's talk about what's good and preserved from the original. There are two key things that come to mind when I think about Visceral's Dead Space - sound and user experience. Both have been wonderfully preserved and rightly so - to change either would be committing a great act of heresy (yes, Dead Space was a religious experience).

The most obvious thing that Visceral did was making the original game sound incredible in an age where sound was generally an afterthought (and arguably still is). Without it, there's no game and the sound design/engineering that took place in 2008 was wildly impressive and in my opinion has yet to be matched or surpassed, even by its own sequels. Remember these names: Don Veca, Andrew Lackey, Dave Feise and Dave Swenson. Their names should be forever holy in your heart. All of their work seems to be in tact if perhaps remastered or retweaked, but if you feed this game through a 5.1+ audio set up, you will experience aural euphoria. Some of the most frightening moments are when an NPC calls you and the opening static just makes your heart skip. Hell, they had a steel pipe falling in the background long before it became a joke meme for zoomers. The calculated chaos of sound in Dead Space is pure joy from the ambient noise, creature calls, and weapon discharges, to the muted thumps and panicked breathing in the absence of atmosphere. It's all phenomenal.

The second thing Dead Space is incredibly well-known for is its integrated UI. It may go completely unnoticed these days since it has long since been the high bar that other games aspire to, not unlike a really funny original Simpsons or Seinfeld joke that has become tropey from overuse following its release into the world. If you pay attention, there's no HUD magically floating in the corners of your screen. Any time you need to interface with something, be it your inventory, your map, or some upgrade hub, it's cleverly integrated into your suit's or some room's holographic display. Even the "cutscenes" where people are talking to you are literally floating in front of the player's character as a 2D window in 3D space. It was completely wild and clever to see in 2008. Important information is literally on the back of your suit and your ammo count is displayed directly on your weapon. Every visual in the game was deliberate and purposefully designed and Motive did a fantastic job preserving it.

So what did they change? Obviously, the graphics overhaul takes center stage and it's great. They didn't wash the game in color or brighten it up; they retained the overall mood of each area and the lighting is absolutely astounding. While some players may encounter performance issues, I've not seen a thing with a 2080ti on Ultra. Seeing the game in such detail is a treat, although it does take a little away from the horror of the unknown, kind of like contemporary horror movies being less scary because the equipment being used to make the film is literally better.

The script and therefore the plot also retains most of its structure, but this time Isaac talks. I don't really know who was complaining that he didn't. I liked that he didn't. I liked that outside of the intro, his helmet never came off and we never saw his face. It allowed you to be Isaac; you know, immersed like in the design goals. Having Isaac talk may be more realistic (I guess), but I feel like something is lost in this re-write.

Next, they changed zero-G to be like it was in 2 and 3. In other words, you have complete control and inertia isn't an obstacle to be overcome. This is where I can understand people arguing with me, but I was never fully on board with the freedom of movement in the sequels. There's something about having complete control that takes away from the experience. To me the lack of it, however, was just part of the immersion and translating the feel of zero-G into a video game experience. For those not in the know, zero-G navigation consisted of aiming at a spot and then shooting off towards it. It made sense to me - why would Isaac be laden with thrusters? Trying to navigate a huge and unwieldy space in straight lines was fun for me. Again, it's not a deal-breaker, but I do find that once again detracts from the horror that Visceral built (and lost in its sequels anyway).

There are other minor changes here and there that ultimately amount to nothing. Some of the characters are race/gender swapped to no effect and Nicole has been aged and Hammond de-aged and I dunno why. Stuff like that. Someone's happy, but it's meaningless to me.

So while this is worth your time and I will certainly see it through to the end, I feel like my future replays will still go back to the original in all its clunky glory. Motive did a great job with the remake, but there's something about the original that's more... visceral.
