Iron digestion needs a rework
As it stands iron digestion crashes the CO2 levels making it ineffective and doesn't add any gasses to the atmosphere in return, meaning it is largely ineffective unless you can actively move to new patches where aerobic respiration is possible as that is the only way to increase atmospheric CO2.

There needs to be an anaerobic source of CO2 in the dephs as well as a means to resupply CO2, perhaps regions should experience osmosis with each other and CO2 should be constantly be resupplied by the hydrothermal vents. All this because iron digestion doesn't produce anything besides ATP and consumes CO2, where did the iron go?

These all were already in the game in 0.7.1. Most patches get a little bit of CO2 added each cycle with the vents getting a very large amount due to volcanism. And also CO2 is one of the compounds that moves between patches.

0.8.0 is releasing in a few hours which further tweaks the dynamic compounds system, including the volcanism effect, increases the speed of compound diffusion between patches, and adds a vent eruption system. I think the balance should be a bit better (I also removed the experimental compounds mode entirely as basically all complaints about compound balance were from players playing with it). So please let me know how the balance feels after 0.8.0 is out.
