Norland F.A.Q.s
Here you can find the most frequently asked questions and our answers gathered in one place. If you have anything else to ask us about, feel free to do so on our discussion board, or on our official Discord server here -> https://discord.gg/VBB3CzEHpa

Q: When is the release date?
A: Right now we are running an open beta test to determine the release window in the coming days.

Q: What will be available in early access?
A: Everything you see in the gameplay trailer and demo, plus different starting provinces with different climates, changing seasons, and more. Most likely, there won't be city fortifications - it's a complex feature related to pathfinding, and it will still be in development for some time.

Q: What are the system requirements for the game?
A: Windows 64-bit
8 GB RAM
Intel® Core™ i3-8100 / AMD Ryzen™ 3 1200
GTX 1060 or similar
Display resolution 1920х1080
Disk space: 1 GB

Q: Will there be multiplayer?
A: No, multiplayer is not possible in this genre.

Q: Will there be a campaign, or is it purely a sandbox mode?
A: It is a sandbox mode with a global end goal - surviving an impending world catastrophe.

Q: Will we manage only one settlement?
A: Yes.

Q: How do you plan to develop combat?
A: We will be adding archers, possibly cavalry, city fortifications, and more tactical elements to combat (currently lacking, we are aware).

Q: Where can I find more information about the game?
A: Developer diaries describing many game systems in detail are available on the Steam page.

Q: Will there be monsters and magic in the game?
A: Norland's world is set in an early medieval period, around the 9th-10th century. We have some strange and large creatures, but no dragons. :) There is no magic.

Q: Will there be titles and a complex feudal system in the game?
A: The feudal system is not fully formed yet. In the game, you can be a vassal or suzerain of another king, pay or receive tribute, capture other lands - but not manage them.

Q: What is the scale of the game?
A: You will be able to develop a city with approximately 250+ inhabitants, and battles can involve up to around 100 characters on each side.

Q: Can we equip and train footmen ourselves?
A: Yes, you can. It will significantly save money on mercenaries.

Q: Will footmen-warriors have lives outside of battles?
A: Yes, they are the same characters as others. And if you don't pay them wages, they may rise in rebellion.

Q: Cannibalism, incest, torture?
A: Those were harsh times!

Q: Will there be crimes?
A: Yes, of course. And a justice system.

Q: Will there be children in the game?
A: Yes, across all social classes. Also, their upbringing and inheritance.

Q: Will people be controlled manually, or do we assign them actions and plans that they follow?
A: Your lords are semi-autonomous, like Sims characters. You assign them work or actions, and they will perform them when they see fit. Otherwise, they go about their own business.

Other characters are fully autonomous, and you cannot give them orders.

When you create an army with soldiers and a commanding lord, that unit is under your direct control.

Q: Will there be technologies in the game and their research?
A: There will be a knowledge system. If a character knows how to do something, you will be able to do it. To learn, you need to read books.
Books can be bought, read, written, borrowed from neighbors, and lost. If there are no books and all knowledgeable characters die, the technology becomes inaccessible.

Q: Will there be trade with other settlements?
A: Yes. Trade will affect relations and the development of neighboring settlements, and your relations will affect receiving more favorable contracts.

"Norland's world is set in an early medieval period, around the 9th-10th century"

Well, plate armor shouldn't be a thing back then, maybe replace it with mail hauberk?

In case you lack the IQ or the linguistic ability to understand, I was talking about the late-medieval style plate armor in-game.
You certainly lack the ability to hold a productive conversation, pointing to the fact that you don't have much argument other than mud slinging.
If you took the time to educate yourself, you'd find other examples of plate armor, in Japan for example, before early medieval period. But of course, who is bothered about accuracy in a video game depiction is only good at mud slinging and baseless arguements. Have fun at that. I hope I have been able to express to the devs that they don't need to care about this and can focus their energy into something more useful.

Your "Ummm Acksually" gimmick is not going to work here, using things unrelated to the game's medieval Europe setting as arguments is like bringing up ramen while others are clearly talking about spaghetti, only because they mentioned the word noodle. However, I do understand that a little cosmetic shouldn't be the focus of the developers, but it will still be nice to add a mail armor if they have the spare time to do so, or maybe even a whole tech tree for different types of armor, although I doubt that will happen anytime soon.

Is it intended that you can draft (make as soilders) salves but once you cancel them they becomes peasent? Also do slaves eat free and work the same as peasants, so there is no point keeping them as salves, might as well convert them to peasants so they spend on their food and drinks?

Also seems like its a strategy to turn salves into soilders as some of them get 5 combact which is much more cost efficient than buying merc?

Lastly, I suppose the strategy is to not draft soilders until you need them so they work as peasants (only keep the good soilders to patrol)

This is kinda realistic, a brigand willl bring atleast some combat skills, further a lord could only afford to feed a few professional soldiers so he would had only the best he could get in his retinue. The problem with the peasant levy strategy is just that only unhappy servs will take up arms, wich is kinda realistic because one of the few advantages that serves have over free people is that they are not expectet to fight.

That answered my question. Can there be an option to just control one character? and identify your courtiers/lineage/party member's motivation/wants/desires/current needs/etc like a sim does? Or just have the option to only control one character but with buffs (like battle brother's lone wolf mechanic)?

Will there be more opportunities for direct interaction to get work done? More likely.
However, already now you can force the lord to perform some urgent action, such as trade with a caravan, by pressing LMB on the icon for this work in the lord's menu.
Will there be modding?

We will work on mod support once we understand what players enjoy in the vanilla game and see the potential for mods.

What will the cost of the game be?
Demi 16 Apr @ 8:27pm
I understand this may clash with a vision of the game but i would love the possibility to mod in some guns..or lightsabers.
how does religion work in game? how much of an effect does it have? are there multiple religions with different positive and negative traits? can you puppet the pope? can you send missionaries to foreign courts to destabilize their kingdoms? can you become the leader of the church? can you change parts of the religion like it's tenets as the game goes on?

If it's like Manor Lords, they won't reveal the price until launch since Hooded Horse's CEO Tim Bender said

“Manor Lords, like all other games on Steam, will not have one price. It will have regional prices that distribute across the world. These aren’t just different currencies — there are large regions of the world where Steam uses US Dollar pricing but in a different way."

"If the US price were to be announced before Manor Lords launches, players in other territories may fear that they won’t be able to afford it."
