Binoculars at the beginning of levels.
You would be able to scout when the level starts. In a sense get a good layout before you jump in. (I Know this is basically useless on some levels)

I think the point is to force you to experiment with the levels through trial and error to find the best route through. it's not a bad idea, but it's counter-intuitive to the game's design.
