Jumplight Odyssey

Jumplight Odyssey

Entire dev team laid off, game abandoned
Posted on their discord just now

Unfortunately, this is not a "good news" post.

For almost 15 years, LoG has been home to some of the most talented and brilliant folks in the industry. This week, we’ve had to say goodbye to many of them.

Rapidly rising operation costs, a weakening AUD, poor Early Access sales, and the unprecedented withdrawal of funding opportunities across the industry have placed us in a position where, as it currently stands, we can no longer afford to cover development costs. As a result, we’ve had to make the impossible decision to pause development indefinitely on Jumplight Odyssey.

More than 50% of our studio has been impacted by redundancies, including the entire Jumplight Odyssey team, meaning plans we had to get the game to full release (including release plans for PS5 & Xbox) have been put on hold indefinitely.

This decision will not impact the launch or quality of Solium Infernum, as we continue to work towards a February 14 release. Nor will it affect the existing support we offer Armello and its players.

We will post more information shortly, including an FAQ re; Jumplight Odyssey to Steam and some details of what comes next.

We are devastated to be in this position, and we have done everything in our power to avoid it. We are so very sorry.

Hey there, thanks for the cross-post. For those seeing this and who might want more context, we've got a lot more information here:

Just to quickly correct the heading here:
* 50% of the studio was made redundant because we're unfortunately not able to move forward with developing JLO. SI will go to full release, and Armello is unaffected.
* JLO is on a temporary hiatus. We'd love to pick it up into the future, but we're currently unable to keep doors open on development with funding.

Well I hope this actually happens, because I love this game to death.

If it brings you any comfort: the game is still playable, and we're adding a final patch to resolve some of the last lingering issues. <3

As stated, I am keeping this game. I am not refunding. I love the concept and this is one game I want to see get revived and succeed.

yea.. You all can be sorry all you want.. but "Rapidly rising operation costs, a weakening AUD, poor Early Access sales, and the unprecedented withdrawal of funding opportunities across the industry have placed us in a position where, as it currently stands, we can no longer afford to cover development costs." is a lame excuse.

its not like this is some kickstarter where you take a risk.. but a game sold on Steam. and not making enough on early access is part of your excuse?!?!?!

Good luck on that other game your company decided to work on. but one has to wonder what folks looking at that game will think, if they check this game.

refund requested.. and while i have about 5 hrs trying to play...

ill escalate until i get a refund. pretty sure adding "poor Early Access sales" then adding "mpossible decision to pause development indefinitely on Jumplight Odyssey." is a VERY valid reason for a refund. (i don't really care about the cash, but i don't want these DEVs to get a penny of my money.

(please note - i know you're in a tough spot. and im just referring to "you" as a rep of a company that.. eh.

never mind.. just another EA game that ended up a waste..just a money grab

maybe they'll come back to it..

maybe they won't.

and apparently the decision wasnt IMPOSSIBLE - becuase they made it.

-- dont get me wrong.. the game seemed cool. i did drop 5 hrs on it. but so many bugs and issues.. i held off truely trying to play it again untill today.. and THIS is the news?

f that. i call Shenanigans

Really do you think they wanted this? Where is your compassion? Every EA game has a label read it before buying EA games. It states that the game could get more updates or be complete how it is. I seriously doubt they wanted to stop development on the game. People in their company friends and co workers got laid off. Show more understanding with what they are dealing with. You are allowed to return the game just don't be rude to the developers they tried.

refund asap. just in case steam argues.

i've not heard back yet.. but i have 5 hrs in game.. so likely have to escalate to a actual person. Yes i now its 2hr steam limit.. but given games issues and the devs admitting their dropping the game.. or just putting it on an "indefinite pause" is total BS.

My "compassion" ended when they took my money then a few months later said they had no idea when they'd be able to deliver the product i bought. (if ever)

i feel for the folks let go, for the folks still working there. the company? the CEO or the leadership? ZERO, they clearly bite off more then they could chew, and that has hurt normal folks.

i'm not going after the folks who worked on the game. - im sure they loved the game, the idea and had high hopes for it. just wanted to make a cool builder/Dungeon keeper/evil genius management style game but based on an 80s scifi cartoon theme game.

but the COMPANY? THE LEADERSHIP? are who messed up. i got total sympathy for the folks who were spending their days trying to make a great game.

I'm just not willing to forgive the COMPANY.. because i feel sorry for the folks let go. (nor excuse the community manager stuck trying to cover up the COMPANIES mistakes/choices.

"You should be aware that some teams will be unable to 'finish' their game. So you should only buy an Early Access game if you are excited about playing it in its current state."

that unable to "finish" might hose me on my refund request.. grr. i'll still argue with steam. and will likely lose. (but that the "team" admits they're spending on a DIFFERENT GAME.. should help. we'll see.

but thats again that is why i called..

Shenanigans..

seems the COMPANY threw this out to get extra funds but spent them to finish what ever "Solium Infernum," is. and maybe hoping it made enough extra to fund this game as well. f that,.

You can't fault anyone that you bought the game and the game company isn't steam they can say you can get a refund but they aren't steam so its steams decision in the end. You don't have any rights you were just buying a right to play the game you don't actually own the game.

er.. i bought a game based of what i was told it WOULD BE. (we take it as it is.. but also based off what it comes become after EA - based off road map and such..*

if the company posted that can not fulfill the 'commitment' they stated when i bought their product - i should be allowed to refund. and that is TOTALLY UP TO STEAM.

had this been some new company, making this game. and it failed like this i wouldn't be as annoyed. it happens. i've a few EA games in my list like that. (and even surviving the abyss devs said they'd at least try to finish it. before dropping it.

but for them to say they are still working on a DIFFERENT GAME. while taking my money for THIS GAME?!?! that they dropped and have zero idea when they'd ever fix/finish it.. despite what was told when i BOUGHT IT.. (and reason for steam to refund me and any others like me who feel this was just a cash grab to fund this other game they are working on.....)

that is messed up.

Steam isn't going to make a exception for just you. You went over the cut off to return the game. The game company isn't steam they don't make decisions for steam and most people that return it are under 2 hours. Steam is the only one that can make that decision. Also if you clearly didn't read the EA label that isn't their fault its on you. I have so many EA games I have been lucky with them being finished. But I know the risk of them. Yes it stinks because this game was and still is good. But things happen that even big companies can't control.

ah.. you'd be surprised. while one goes over the 2 hr limit - one can get a refund in such situations.

check starfields return rate if you doubt me. (note im one of the few who liked it for what it is.)

as for the rest that's largely just a back handed insult, which i'll ignore and block you for. i have no time for such nonsense.

if steam refunds me. GREAT. if not i'll argue with them, and work it out. or be stuck with this POS in my library. oh well.

life goes on.

just hope others don't waste their cash buying from these DEVS.. they might have had a decent game.. but learning they'll steal the cash you spent on a game.. to fund something ELSE should be a wake up call..

bu-byeeeeeee!
