That and staff rotations making it go unmanned
just replacing the calibrator machine with a different will make the engineer get stuck in a "dunnowhattodonow!"-loop. But a save and reload of the game tends to fix that.
But yes, the manned ones are twice as fast AND benefit from the bonus of those "10% calibration boosters" that you can build on the bridge.
At the end I built SIX of those boosters and was always able to run away in time.
