can it work as single player?

i mean, i know this is a co-op focus ,and i will most asuredly enjoy it that way

but i cant help but wonder if it can be played alone (in case friends dont jump on it) or its gonna be one of those "not balanced to play alone" kind of games you gotta sweat a lot to get to the end of a run

thanks for the answer
i really like that, i really like coop games, but of course, there be times i dont have anyone to play with or dont feel like randoms, so that is pretty nice
