Online issues?! (Disconnecting, slow framerate, etc.)? Possible solutions here!
Thanks for purchasing our game on Steam! If you're having framerate or disconnection issues online, though, here are some initial troubleshooting solutions for you!

Before you get started, we highly recommend disabling all background applications! This will ensure you have a clean troubleshooting canvas to work from.

GET THE LATEST UPDATE - Please ensure your game is up to date!

FIRST LINE OF DEFENSE: PORTS
Use this if you're having trouble creating or connecting to games.

Your network must be configured to allow Steam access to the following ports (in order from highest to lowest priority for QoS users):

Steam Client
UDP 27000 to 27015 inclusive (Game client traffic)
UDP 27015 to 27030 inclusive (Typically Matchmaking and HLTV)
TCP 27014 to 27050 inclusive (Steam downloads)
UDP 4380

Dedicated or Listen Servers
TCP 27015 (SRCDS Rcon port)

Steamworks P2P Networking and Steam Voice Chat
UDP 3478 (Outbound)
UDP 4379 (Outbound)
UDP 4380 (Outbound)

(Also, this probably goes without saying, but make sure your Steam Client is currently online, and is not in offline mode. Kthx.)

SECOND LINE OF DEFENSE: VERTICAL SYNC
Use this if you're experiencing slowdown issues online!

From the Main Menu > Help & Options > Game Settings, set Vertical Sync to Off.

Please be aware that ALL members of your party should set Vertical Sync to off, as slowdown issues from other players in your game may affect you.

THIRD LINE OF DEFENSE: RESOLUTION
Use this if you're experiencing choppiness online (still)!

Have ALL members of your online party set their resolution to the LOWEST possible setting.

The point of this is to help identify WHICH user is causing the slowdown, not to trap you all in a low-resolution reverse-wonderland. If one member of the party has their resolution set to higher than their PC can reasonably support, all members of the party will experience slowdown.

From the Main Menu > Help & Options > Game Settings, set everyone's resolutions to the lowest available setting, and Full Screen to Off.

Then, one by one, have each party member set their resolution back to what they normally use. After each person changes their settings, go into an online game and continue playing.

If the performance slows down after a change for any one person, you've found your culprit. Have this person experiment with different settings until you find a good balance between performance and appearance.

FOURTH LINE OF DEFENSE: A SUPPORT TICKET
If none of these methods work, please open up a Support Ticket with The Behemoth, and we'll do our best to help you out!

Yeah, that's neat and all, but why does someone else's performance affect mine, and how are you gonna get others to change their settings if you can't use text chat and you don't have a mic?

Why wouldn't you be able to use text chat? Chat through Steam!
AWESOME troubleshooting tips, by the way. I've been having a lot of these issues.

how about controller issues? castle crashers always makes me pick two characters, even when I use just a keyboard...

Works grat, thanks.
Sweet, we're glad these help everyone. Again, if you are still having issues, the best way to get in touch with us is through a ticket:

We like fun! Not bugs or network errors! We want you to have fun with no bugs or network errors!

Moldy Towel -- if you have another controller plugged in, your game may be detecting it as a second player. Which two character slots are being assigned? Support ticket may be the way to go, though... it'll be faster. ;)

Slots one and two, though my friend plugged in a controller to play yesterday and then I was playing as characters 1 and 3, and he only had one character. I'll probably put a ticket through later.

I keep getting input lag in multiplayer. I followed all the troubleshooting steps, even though they don't really apply to this issue, but the problem persists.
Moldy -- the game will detect any active controllers, so obviously... don't touch any controllers you don't want to use. We've also found that 360 emulators can cause this issue, so uninstall any x360ce's (although if you want to keep using them, just uninstalling and updating them should be enough). This was a more common issue in an older version of our game, so you may want to try uninstalling and reinstalling Castle. If that still doesn't help... yep, it's ticket time!

Ultimacy -- please put in a ticket, my friend! We'll do our best to help you out. These steps are meant as a first-line-of-defense catch-all, but there may be more going on. Let us know in your ticket that you followed ALL suggested steps in our Steam stickied post so you don't have to hear it again.
