Can you shoot the church bell on the first run?
meaning, with the pistol?

Is it just a really hard shot or did they make it literally impossible.

Long story short - you cannot. The pistol does not have enough range for its bullets to reach the bell.

You can in Separate Ways - but it just says that Ada must enter church to ring its bell
