Yes, it's a hard game. No, that doesn't mean it deserves a negative review, folks.

The game's awesome, and it has a thriving modding community, with the only real con being you have to get the mods off-site because the entire modding scene is community driven and not officially supported.

As long as you're fine with a tough-as-nails game (which you probably are if you're looking at roguelikes!) then this is a wonderful, finely-tuned game that still has a thriving community even a decade later.

Tip: Pausing a lot is highly encouraged if you have trouble keeping up with it. Even some higher-end players sometimes still will pause for a few seconds in encounters if things go haywire!

Random events happen to you, hope you survive.

A cult classic rogue-lite with a very well rounded design for each and every ship, weapon, system and race altogether, making for an enjoyable experince with a lot of !!FUN!! to be had. Almost every ship is fun to play and shows some kind of aspect of a strategy that you wouldn't ordinarily opt into on a different ship, which makes them all great for replayability. Of course, the random chances can feel like complete bullcrap, but that's not always up to RNJesus to decide, since you can (and should) find ways to compensate that with more reliable means to your end, be it hitting the target or avoiding being hit.

However, the advanced content kinda felt lopsided because on one side,the flak cannons and mind control are very fun and are perfectly balanced (TM), but on the other side things like cloning and Lanius content were very self-contained with very little benefits or bonuses in the game as a whole that you would expect from standard edition content (see: blue options; why would a disease disable cloning the infected? what?). Every C class ship starting with a cloning bay felt like a forced way for the player to interact with that system, and it only ever truly helped me by saving a crewmember once, and even then it was because I made it a rule to never let the starting crew of a ship die. It's fair to say that I didn't miss out on much by playing through every ship's A class with advanced content turned off, plus that helped with getting the feel for the game with less parameters in play.

I also hear that there's a robust modding scene, but I fear for the safety and health of myself and those around me if I dare try that out. I've squeezed every single drop I could (bar playing with Vulcan, woe is me) and I am almost sure I will need a long vacation to recover my wrecked nerves and burned behind.

A friend put me on this game back in 2016 I think cause he knew I was into strategy stuff and I was hooked immediately.
I still play it every now and then and the soundtrack's good too.
