How is it for a new player now ?

Thinking about trying the game and probably will regardless, just wanted some opinions on the actual situation of the game in terms of balance/modes/enjoyability/ability to create decks or homebrew and having wins etc and how much time is required to build a deck...

BLOOMBURROW LAUNCHES NEXT TUESDAY!

All the furry fun of Bloomburrow will be here next Tuesday, July 30! But this means you have just one week left to get in your Bloomburrow bundle preorders before they disappear. There are three bundles to designed to match how you like to play[magic.wizards.com] MTG Arena. Decide which you like, then log in and visit the MTG Arena Store[magic.wizards.com] and pick them up before they're gone.

BLOOMBURROW STREAMER EVENT BEGINS JULY 24!

Your favorite streamers, content creators, and Magic superfans are heading to the plane of Bloomburrow! On July 24, the Bloomburrow Streamer Event begins. Creators of all kinds will explore the offerings of Bloomburrow on MTG Arena, trying out new deck brews with the critters of Bloomburrow. The event will begin at 8:00AM PDT and run for the remainder of that day, so get ready to cheer on your favorite creators during this sneak preview at Magic's coziest set.

COOL BLOOMBURROW CARDS AND STYLES

When you enter the plane of Bloomburrow as an outsider, interesting changes occur, as Ral Zarek discovered in the Bloomburrow Magic Story[magic.wizards.com]. How might other familiar denizens of the Multiverse be affected if they found themselves on the plane? We offer some possible answers to this question with the Imagine: Courageous Critters cards that are also coming to MTG Arena!

You can add these Courageous Critters to your collection—there are 25 in all, plus one rebalanced card, and these include planeswalkers as well as popular and legendary creatures—by crafting them with wildcards.

Five fuzzy planeswalkers can also be had as sleeves through the new Bloomburrow Mastery Emporium! We're changing up how we do Mastery Pass rewards by introducing the Mastery Emporium, where you can spend your Mastery Orbs on rewards you select. Check out the Bloomburrow Mastery Details[magic.wizards.com] for a full list of what you'll find in the emporium.

2024 RENEWAL HAPPENS JULY 30

Each year, MTG Arena has a Renewal period that coincides with rotation in formats like Alchemy and Standard, and each year it's a time to celebrate with a bunch of rewards!

The Magic year turns over with the arrival of Bloomburrow on July 30, and we have all the details on what Renewal and rotation mean in the Renewal for MTG Arena's 2024 Standard Rotation article.[magic.wizards.com]

You may have seen the Renewal Egg when you log in—if you haven't logged in for a while, be sure to do so soon to ensure you get your Renewal Egg on July 30. It's full to bursting with these rewards that'll be yours when it hatches next Tuesday:

I have a mixed feelings about Magic the Gathering as anyone who have been playing the games for 20years on and off will have. So I will start with the good, and follow up with the bad:

The client is for the most part very smooth and quick, maybe even the best card game client out there. Which to be fair though, does not say that much.
The main good thing about Magic Arena, is that it is realistic to play as a free player and still have fun. Though as the original fomo/p2w game. Magic the gathering have adopted similar monetization to mobile games, though for the most part, this is in the mild end compared to competition.

To play the game for free on the highest levels at an even playing field, is possible, but not trivial. You will have enough resources in game to play a draft approximately twice a week, and more if you have a above average win rate. As a new magic player, expect the competition to be fierce, even at the lowest brackets.

It is possible to play constructed formats with an even playing field if you are able to select one meta deck and play with that in one format. However, as a free to play player, do not expect to be able to make more than one tier 1 deck in a season.

Which brings me to the ugly part of Magic Arena: They ban a lot of cards. and while you might get compensated for lost cards. All the supporting cards in that deck will have to be written off. I tend to take year long breaks from magic before coming back again. And my last break was triggered by losing decks I had heavily invested in twice in a row because of bans.

After spending 100's of Euros in the early life of Magic Arena. I have now decided to play it for free when I feel like it, and keep my purchases to paper magic.

My experience has been fun, but only on the surface level does the game allow newcomers to enjoy the game. Besides the occasional fight in casual battles, most games are going to be with players who have put too much time or money to make it an even and enjoyable fight. First you learn the basics and what the cards do, and next your tossed into absolute mayhem and carnage.
Maybe if you know what your getting into with Magic it'll be fine, but it would be better to go waste your time elsewhere rather than here.
