There are quite a lot of small script tweaks to the many Campaigns and scenarios in DE
DE has quite a few small tweaks that make it easier to control your troops.
finally the graphics are improved in DE enough that when you go back ti 2013 you will miss some of them ... like how Castles fall down.
EDIT: I note I failed answer your question-
Balance varies between the two versions with IMHO a better balance within DE Individual Civs do differ at times as do Unique Units
You barely played DE ie have you tried playing the campaigns using each of the different methods of playing most of the scenarios?
Or, you are one of the minority of AoE players who choose only to play MP.... a mere fraction of the game.
It didn't take me long to discover just how richly DE was tweaked in the Campaigns.
I have played 3753 and 1753 respectively true Value For Money, especially as i probably have another 2k or 3k hours of play before i delve into more of the fantastic user content generated by real fans of the game .
(On an unrelated note, how come the Icon for this game is all grey now, and all discussions are locked? I was hoping to at least see an announcement in discussions but I didn't see anything. Or I missed it somehow.)

post #98 would be my answer.
When you set up your games to farm those Achievements don't forget you can often earn many different Achievements in one game.
eg set up a game against a different race enemy for each game you play. You will soon score all those 10 or 20 scores, and when you have won against any particular race and scored that Achievement you can change the races to keep scoring those qualifying games.
Things like using the Bombard Canon or trebuchet a certain number of time I reserve for scenarios where they are most useful.
Tbh it depends on the kind of MP.
Ranked/Competitive? Then DE is the way to go as matchmaking made it easier to find players on your level and all the new qol features added for lobby settings (hidden civs, spectators not needing to join a lobby i.e. taking a player slot)
Custom scenarios that haven't been ported to DE yet? Then HD or even the CD Version on Voobly.
Ranked in non-standard settings (e.g. Forest Nothing)? Then HD.
Unranked MP? Then DE as you can balance out skill levels via the Handicap feature.
