I always have lime powder to spare and bones from butchers being collected since the very start of the game (I am also a Rat serial killer, lots of corpses to get bones from without burning, I just let them rot on their own).
Quick example: I can keep 6 smelters (ingot makers) and 4 farms running at the same time. Still have lime powder to spare with the use of 3 - 4 grinders. I was trying a full 10 mint build (not worth it, but is a discussion for another day).
Another good reason it's blocking the consumption of grain and turning it into flour for your bakers to make bread. You will get a LOT of flour, so you don't need your grain farms to work faster. I even only use a single grain farm for my 3 - 4 bakers. My kingdoms are mostly feed by meat, better food resource in my opinion.
I guess if you had lots of lime around and nothing smart to use them on? Its good to have options, but I agree since bones are an easy replenishable resource it seams to be that the 2nd recipe will usually be the one to go for.
The Ox trick Zelon mentioned sounds interesting though :). Did not get to use it yet. Sounds cool :).
Rabbit meat is indeed really strong, but you can put farms anywhere.
