No Webcam! No Problem. Free webcam app recommendations!
No Webcam? No Problem.

Turn Your Phone Into a Webcam

Android 14 allows you to directly turn your smartphone into a webcam by plugging in with USB-C, thanks to its built-in Android webcam feature.

iOS users with FaceID-enabled devices should download the Beam Eye Tracker iOS app[apps.apple.com] to benefit from offloading and 3D sensor tracking. If you don’t have FaceID, then consider the Apple built-in Continuity Camera[support.apple.com].

For older devices, explore free webcam apps like Camo Studio that work on all platforms.

Once your phone is set up as a webcam, choose the virtual webcam it creates in Windows as your input device in the Beam Eye Tracker settings, similar to selecting a standard webcam.

Additionally, for those looking for more webcam app options:

If previously downloaded/bought, NDI HX Camera (now paid, previously free) is available. Check out NDI Webcam[ndi.video] and NDI HX Camera[ndi.video] for more details.

Droidcam offers a free version for lower-quality video, working both wired and wireless. Visit Droidcam[www.dev47apps.com] for more information.

Epoccam by Elgato supports free 720p quality and works with Elgato client wired and wireless, as well as NDI virtual input. For more details, visit Epoccam by Elgato[www.elgato.com].

Camo Studio is another excellent option for free webcam apps, accessible at Camo Studio[camo.studio].

What gives you the best results out of those options?

If you have an iOS device with TrueDepth cam then by far the best option is the Beam Eye Tracker iOS app[apps.apple.com].

If not, native Android and iOS webcam solutions should be preferred.

As a last resort, if you need one of the free webcam apps out there, I'd recommend Camo Studio[camo.studio] mainly because it seems well-supported. We have not noted a relevant difference from the other webcam apps in terms of tracking performance.

The answer depends a bit on your needs.
The iOS device with TrueDepth will give you the best experience (CPU load and calibration robustness). We haven't enabled the high FPS option for the iOS extension yet.
The Logitech Brio 4K is a great option and allows 60+fps. If you have that camera available, I'd use that as the default, as placing the phone every time can become a bit tedious over time.
The Sony DSLR should work. However, if it's not recognized in Beam as a camera input, then please download the free Manycam app (manycam.com) as an intermediary solution.
