Demo Release

We finally released our Steam demo after a year of playtesting Underboard, the game has come a long way and a lot of that is thanks to all the testers and their feedback.

To start this new development chapter we wanted to do 2 things, add another part of the narrative to the game and start a new marketing push. Since we're expecting more new players to come, we improved our introductory experience to better explain the game based on feedback from testers.

There's still a lot more we want to do in our path to the full game release like adding tons of new content, completely new systems, more music tracks, complete the narrative and localize the game to more languages.

New Introductory Experience

The old tutorial is gone.
A new short and guided run where the narrative of the game starts to unfold now works as the tutorial.
After completing the tutorial, you will be able to start normal runs, where the narrative continues to develop until you get your first win.

Changes

The old world map was replaced by a zone selection menu in the title screen.
The collection was moved to the title screen.
The spell keybinds were changed to the alpha keys 1-6 to avoid keyboard layout issues.
The space keybind now works to toggle the rewards menu.
Bosses with multiple rounds now show a "Round X" title card after winning a round.
The start combat button is now highlighted until combat starts.
We added analytics for events in runs that would aid us in balancing the game (you can stop sharing your run data with us from the title menu settings).
The Plague spell now applies 50% more Poison at base and 25% more per use.
The Instant Sprout spell now applies 2 Harden at base (from 1).

Fixes

Fixed being able to drag characters during the move animation between map areas.
Fixed instances of the dialogue panel flickering before opening.
Fixed skipping dialogue lines too fast with the space keybind not registering line ends, making the text continue to be typed instead of fully revealed.
Fixed the Fish and Crab spells not showing the correct tooltip details for their stats.
Fixed the Battery skill from the Robot showing 1 less hit in its collection tooltip.

Playtest Update: New Active Spells

New Active Spells

Active spells should provide tools to solve issues in player teams, this means that spells should be flexible enough to work for multiple teams, but have the possibility to really shine in specific combinations.

You should care about what your team is doing when choosing active spells, but you should also consider what the spell does when choosing passive spells to support it, with multiple ways of going about it.

Casting active spells should feel more spectacular, this often means a clearer fantasy with improved audiovisuals, but the flow of gameplay should remain the priority.

We reworked our active player spells:

The previous 16 active spells are gone and we added 16 new ones with improved synergies between teams and spell loadout.

Changes

Spell Radius and Skill Radius were renamed to Spell Range and Skill Range and now work like Attack Range for calculating positions.
The Proliferation passive spell is gone and we added a new red passive spell in its place. This is a buff.
Clearer Block and Suppression descriptions that explicitly state they double Damage Reduction from Resistances.
Renamed the Football Player to Athlete.

Fixes

Fixed character highlights not being cleared after casting an active spell that affected any character.
Fixed level up previews showing wrong numbers when going from level 1 to level 2.
Fixed situations where you could drag your characters around while the rewards menu was enabled.

Playtest Update: Narrative Intro

Narrative Intro

In this monthly update we're rolling out an intro to establish the foundation for the narrative of the game. This comes with the following changes:

Revamped title screen.
The first time the game is open a new language menu will appear.
The new intro will play after choosing a language and each time you open the game (a new setting option will allow you to disable it).

Quality of Life Changes

The focus of the following changes is to improve how we communicate info in the game, as well as communicating previously hidden info.

Dialogue now appears faster (~66%).
Added a reroll tooltip in the reward menu.
The trait panel is now interactable in the reward menu.
The trait panel now grows larger to use unoccupied inventory space, showing up to double the amount of traits at once.
Trait tooltips in the trait panel now highlight their current bonus.
Reward options with traits you already have are now highlighted with an animaiton.
Hovering over a character, item or spell will highlight their traits in the trait panel with an animation.
Rewards granting traits on pickup now show the new total points you would have for those traits after picking that reward, as well as indicating the new bonus with a change of color.
The combat logs now show all bars at the same time, with the individual buttons working as sort orders. A single set of buttons at the top of the panel now works for both teams.
Added combat log tooltips showing further details about the sources of damage and healing.
Added a visual indicator when tooltips are hidden, with an icon indicating the reason.
Tooltips are now hidden during active combats (a new setting option was added to show them).
The Energy Charges and Barrier keywords now have clearer descriptions stating their consumption.
All status effects are now shown on hovering a character's status panel (this requires the tooltip details to be toggled on).

Enemy Skill Changes

The Perennial Fruit skill from Aloeva now grants Armor at lvl 1 and 2 (instead of Healing).
The Hemosynthesis skill from Muertocho now targets their default target (instead of the lowest Health one).
The Regurgitate skill from Snappet now targets the farthest enemy of highest level (instead of the lowest Health one). Its Skill Power scaling was also increased by 10%.
The Restorative Crop from Dermagora now targets the ally with the lowest Health of highest level (instead of only the lowest Health ally).
The Spar skill from Crocky was renamed to Hook and now has a +60% Skill Power Multiplier while Flanking.
The Precipitation skill from Pinice and Nail Insertions skill from Cadoovoor had their Skill Power scalings reduced by 10%.

Character Skill Changes

The Intonjutsu skill from the Ninja now teleports him to the closest enemy of highest level (instead of lowest Health enemy).
The Riot skill from the Punk now has +100% Health Steal (instead of granting him Defiance). Its Skill Power scaling was also increased by 10%.
The Bastion skill from the Knight now grants him Defiance.
The Crash skill from the Football Player and Fracture skill from the Viking now apply ~20% more Bleed and less Poise Damage.
The Atone skill from the Baby and Absolve skill from the Messiah now also scale with 40% of Total Resistances (instead of applying 1 Cleanse).
The Bless skill from the Baby was swapped with the Judgement skill from the Nun (as well as their lvl 3 versions, the Pact skill from the Devil and Oblation skill from the Priestess).
The Judgement skill from the Baby now also scales with 20% of Missing Health.
The Pact skill from the Devil now also scales with 30% of Missing Health and targets the closest enemy of highest level (instead of their default target).
The Oblation skill from the Priestess now applies Heal with +1 Skill Radius (instead of granting extra Health).
The Curse skill from the Witch now applies 40% of Skill Power as Chill per target in radius (instead of always applying 60% Skill Power).
The Unnerve skill from the Mage skill now deals damage with +1 Skill Radius (instead of applying 1 Dispel).
The Pyrotechnics skill from the Archer was renamed to Explosive Arrow and now uses 60% Skill Power to deal Skill Damage and applies 1% Skill Power as Crush stacks to their default target (instead of using only 30% Skill Power in an area of effect).
The Treat skill from the Scout now shoots a projectile against their default target (instead of a random one).
The Toxins skill from the Huntress now shoots projectiles againts targets in her Attack Range (instead of random ones).

General Changes

The Stealth, Concentration and Endurance traits now have bonuses at 4 -> 8 points (instead of bonuses at 3 -> 6 -> 9 points). This effectively removed their first bonus to lower the requirements for their second and third one.
Increased the base Critical Attack Multiplier in characters and from all sources by 50%.
Increased the Skill Combo Multiplier from all sources to by 50%.
Increased Health Steal on Hit from all sources by 33%.
Base Mana Regeneration is now 1% of Unavailable Mana (instead of 1% Missing Mana), allowing Reserved Mana to also count.
The Fish spell now gives +1 Mana Regeneration and +25% Mana Reservation Efficiency (instead of +25% Cooldown Recovery and +25% Mana Reservation Efficiency).
The Crab spell now gives +25% Cooldown Recovery and +1 Spell Range (instead of +1 Mana Regeneration and +1 Spell Range).
Added a screen shake effect on character deaths and combat loss (with a new setting option to disable it).
Added a Hot easter egg.

Fixes

Fixed combat timer resetting the seconds displayed after reaching a minute.
Fixed run timer resetting the minutes displayed after reaching an hour.
Fixed tooltips from characters not hiding after death.
Fixed combat log highlighting dead characters.
Fixed combat log not highlighting characters after a combat reset.
Fixed projectile skills failing to apply their effects to an ally if the ally becomes Hidden before the healing projectile reaches them. This was causing Chombie and Dermagora skills to be wasted.

Demo Feedback

Good start but it seems very generic right now. Demos can be like that, I would just hope to see meaningful meta progression and something that distinguishes it from a lot of others in this genre. Not seeing the playback loop ATM but certainly hope to. Love the art style and the progress so far....
