Marathon 2 Shotgun > Doom 2 Super Shotgun

Ignore my hours, I was playing the Marathons on Aleph One literally back in college.

So, I'm going to be honest here. I go against the grain, it seems, but I have say it:

Marathon 2: Durandal is the weakest Marathon. I said it. I think it's the Bronze medal in the Marathon trilogy. Why? Well, once it hits the halfway point of the game, the mission designs start to get cheap. I mean, enemies literally spawn ON you cheap. And, worse still? The game can be stingey with a certain ammo type. And, while it isn't as labyrinthian as the first Marathon, the maps feel so.. out of place, at times. They don't feel like real spaces and a lot of Marathon 1's did. This isn't a critique of the layouts, those are fine, but rather a critique of atmosphere.

Part of that is the lack of the brilliance ambient soundtrack. Now, it's just natural ambiance. It's good, but Marathon's ST was pretty fantastic for what it was.

So, bad game--NO. Marathon 2 still kicks ass.

The ammo shortage I mentioned earlier? For the new double-barreled lever action shotgun. How does that work? No one cares, nerd. Just because you read gun magazines at the Walmart doesn't mean you're an expert and, even if you actually are, no one cares about gun mechanical accuracy in a game about an undead cyborg superhuman fighting alien slavers that took over a spaceship made from the Martian moon Deimos.

At anyrate, this shotgun could very well be one of the best shotguns ever put in a video game. I'm not kidding, it's that good. And when you get two of them and go akimbo? It is magical watching you shoot and then cycle the lever ala Terminator 2. It's so good for getting out of a bad situation.

More enemies, a new weapon that's a game changer, and better map layouts? That's Marathon 2. And, it's FREE. Get it.
