Dead Rising Deluxe Remaster was a giant surprise this year developed by Capcom and NeoBard as a quite literal remaster/remake to one of my favorite games of all time. I believed that I missed when they were having the Capcom showcase this summer (for which I remember them announcing Resident Evil 7 for the phone??) but I certainly remember my feelings when I first heard about the remaster: cautiously optimistic. This is one of, if not my favorite, games of all time and as such when anyone says “Remaster” it could mean one of three things: absolute dumpster fire (aka Kingpin: Reloaded), bare minimum (most remasters out there) or could be absolute gold (like the Nightdive Remasters) and as such, I knew there was a ⅔ of a chance to which this could absolutely blow fat d i c k. My hopes for there being more for the Dead Rising franchise went limp under the absolute clusterf u c k of Dead Rising 4 (review for that below) and as such, I figured that playing Chop Till' You Drop on the Wii and 4 would be the last that I would play of Dead Rising for quite some time. Over the months I would see inside developer previews of the game but I didn’t really tune in much then but would still remain semi-optimistic, so much that I PRE-ORDERED the digital copy to play Day 1 (which I didn’t do anyways cause I got so busy so no more of that) and since the failure of Dead Rising 4 I don’t really pre-order games unless I go into it for collectible purposes (aka every Playstation Exclusive ever except Concord and certain others). This is also in spite of the many criticisms that I’ve heard/seen (and agreed on some) for the game like the lack of TJ Rotolo as Frank West, how goofy some of the character models look, and the removal of certain things (will get into later). Recently over the past month I’ve played it on and off as a sort of “chill out and vibe” game after I beat Batman: Arkham Origins and just in time for the Halloween season, I decided to beat this game and review it.

The gameplay for the remaster remains largely the same, though with a few changes to certain mechanics as well. Starting with the actual camera (since Frank is a photographer), you can actually choose to turn on and off the flash or create dutch camera angles. Some of these upgrades of course you’ll have to find around the mall as an added little collectible, but I think that it’s pretty damn cool that they added that in. However, on the flip side, they removed the Erotica points system in photography too. What’s that? In the original game you can take photos of things and there will be an added category depending on what's in the pic (Funny is putting stupid helmets, Brutality for the really violent scenes, Erotica for the more perverted photos, etc). They removed Erotica entirely so anytime you take a pic of someone posing in a seductive manner (like Cheryl in one of her quests), it’s replaced with the Drama category. I personally don’t hate this but I don’t enjoy it; this I can understand that nowadays things are a lot different to things back twenty years ago, but I also wanted as much of the original in there as humanly possible. This also affects a side quest in the sense that Kent, a psychotic photographer, wanted you to show him your best Erotic picture in the original and it basically gave him a characterization as an unhinged freak. In the remaster, it feels a bit less unhinged but I also suppose it didn’t really affect it too much anyways considering he still tries to infect a guy later.

The actual combat itself feels fine for the most part, it still feels the same and/or better due to several layout changes but admittedly I felt that it lost a bit of the “oomph” that the original Dead Rising had, at least at the beginning. In fact, a whole lot of the game feels a lot easier with the combat: the beginning boss with Carlito used to take a whole lot more in the original while in this version? A lot easier. Later on while the Special Forces invaded, I took down a helicopter with two assault rifle shots while it took a lot more in the original. Now I also had a skill book with me (for which they added a whole bunch of new ones) that increased firepower, but even in the original I didn’t feel like it did this. According to the TVTropes page, your fists do three times the damage from the original; like there are changes like this that make the game fundamentally way easier than the original ever did. Hell, about the only complaint I really have with the difficulty here is that the Small Chainsaw you get from Adam was nerfed a decent bit and it disappoints me.

This "Deluxe Remaster" is appropriately named because it's both a light-remake and remaster. This review is going to act more as a comparison to the original rather than a review of the core game because they are very similar.


The game plays mostly the same as it did 18 years ago, but with a more modern, updated control scheme. With the modern controls the game will control as expected for a 3rd person action game in 2024. This control scheme also gives the skills that Frank learns more intuitive commands, such as dodge rolling being circle/B on the controller rather than a double forward motion on the left-stick. Frank feels weightier in DRDR and less responsive as a result, almost as if there is built-in input delay. This causes the combat and movement to feel noticeably sluggish when compared with the original. DRDR allows for the use of the original control scheme if preferred, so overall the new controls are a fine addition and completely optional.


In DRDR you will be killing zombies, taking pictures, and doing time-gated cases, which are story-related main-quests, survivor rescuing side-quests, and psychopath boss fights. When doing these you gain experience called "PP" or "Prestige Points" which levels Frank up, giving him access to new skills, increased carry capacity, damage, and health.

Zombie killing in this game is almost the same as in the original. There seems to either be a bug, oversight, or for whatever reason, a deliberate choice, to remove Frank's i-frames when mid-attack. Frank can now be hit, or grabbed out of all of his attacks. This was immediately noticeable and completely disrupts the flow of the combat. This also applies to all psychopath boss fights. This may sound like a good thing to some, because it does make the combat harder, but because the overall game logic is the same as the original, it can, and often does, result in Frank being infinitely stun-locked until he dies, which is incredibly frustrating. Police zombies with handguns can now shoot their guns, which is actually something from one of the many beta versions of the original game, so that's a neat addition, though a little annoying at times.

Taking pictures with Franks camera is the second most common mechanic, and it's both better and worse in DRDR. Mechanically the camera is better; there are new camera items found in the mall such as flash, focus, and brightness which add a level of depth to the the camera the original did not have. The original game had "PP" stickers on points of interest scattered around the mall that garnered huge experience bonuses and that has been expanded in DRDR with more POI's in the mall to find. The PP gained from taking pictures has been significantly increased and the erotica category has been removed, which may be upsetting to purists or people generally opposed to censorship. Overall the mechanic works the same way but with a missing category and higher experience rewards.

Cases work the same way as the original. They are time-gated and thus can only be accessed during specific times. Apart from the story cases, most of them are survivor escort quests. The survivor AI has been improved and they are far less frustrating to save. They have a "happiness" system and a preferred food that will increase their happiness, which makes them more efficient in combat and more likely to follow orders. They will also point out PP stickers, hidden weapons and give general tutorial-style advice such as how to cook food or make the various power-up drinks from the blender. Speaking of the blender, one was added to the safe room, which is nice. You can also have more survivors at once than in the original. Psychopath boss fights are the next most common, and work mostly the same, though with the changes to Franks i-frames they are harder to deal with. I also noticed that bosses with high mobility such as Adam and Sean will often get stuck on objects and behave erratically compared to the original. The story missions are unchanged.

You can now speed up time at save-points which is a welcome change to those that want to experience the story but would rather not wait in real time for new cases to be available.

PP Gains have been increased across the board, making leveling up significantly faster. This could be seen as good change to some, but to others this disrupts the balance of the game. Frank being fairly weak at the beginning, and then ridiculously strong by the end was a core part of the balancing of the original game. Leveling up too quick makes this game significantly easier and throws most of the challenge out the window. Capcom should've offered a setting that allowed the original PP gain to alleviate this. They also added new magazines in this game, some of which are absolutely broken, such as one that gives you access to all of Franks skills immediately. For some odd reason, there are far less zombies in the maintenance tunnels, which makes that area far easier to traverse; zombies will also "pop-in" quite noticeably in this area. Overall, the balancing of this game makes it incredibly easy, which is disappointing to me.

This game visually looks great. The map geometry hasn't been updated much, if at all though, so sometimes it can look a little strange if you're paying a lot of attention. Character models have been heavily improved in detail (RIP Frank's hairline), and have significant improvements to facial animations. Zombie models are much higher quality and even include updated versions of unused beta models from the original game. They removed the sexually suggestive zombie models from this game. The improved lighting adds to the atmosphere and better sells what time of day it is, which is a welcome improvement to a game with a heavy emphasis on time management. The caveat to this is the game runs pretty bad in some locations on PC, namely Leisure Park and Wonderland Plaza. If I had to guess, this is mostly due to the new dynamic lighting. The game micro-stutters in these areas pretty significantly on my system. I also have recurring low frame-rate when first loading into an area for around 3-5 seconds. These performance issues are odd because I have a fairly powerful PC (3090, i7 10700K, 32GB RAM) and the game is on a fast NVME SSD. DLSS does not help, and these issues persist regardless of screen resolution or graphics settings.

The voice acting has been entirely redone down to the zombie moans and groans. Most of the performances sound fine, though it is odd hearing the same lines ("I've covered wars ya know") performed in the exact same way, but with different actors. Frank's new voice is fine, though I prefer the original. The actor for Brad sounds very forced and is by far the worst recast in this game. Everyone else I could take or leave. Zombie ambiance in the mall sounds very quiet to almost non-extent which hurts the atmosphere, especially at night when the mall music is off. The foley sounds such as footsteps, weapon attacks, and blood sprays sound unchanged but remastered. The soundtrack has stayed the same but the songs sound like they have been remastered, or have higher quality files.

This remaster has been censored in several different areas. Like I mentioned before, the erotica category has been removed from the camera mechanic, which rewarded you for taking lewd photos of female characters and zombies. Lewd models are now gone, one character was race-swapped from Chinese to White, and another character no longer references the Vietnam war. To some these are positive changes, to others it's a deal breaker, so it really depends on the person.
