I can run it with Proton 9.0.3 in Fedora using the SteamDeck var but not everyone can, it seems.
Do you know which codecs seem to be needed? Photo for idea of what its doing

Admittedly, I'm not sure. I can't get external players to play or read them, even though they play correctly in-game. Doesn't help that the Steam Deck FMVs are reportedly in a different format, which is how the launch var is supposed to work.
I would enable the `universe` and `multiverse` sources in your update settings, then install the `ubuntu-restricted-extras` package. That should install the most common not-so-open-source codecs. Afterwards, you can install a player with comprehensive codec support, like VLC or mpv, to make sure that you have as many formats covered as possible.
All of this assumes you've already tried verifying your game file integrity (in case something was corrupted) and have your shader cache enabled. The latter is occasionally required by Proton to store versions of FMVs that it can play back. I don't think this is the case here, but it's a good rule of thumb.
This is also less likely to work if the other games' FMVs play correctly, since they should all share the same encoding.
