They need to put save points before the long cut scenes
Seriously, games need to just allow you to save anywhere (including during cut scenes)

The game has auto-saves, but I haven't paid attention when these occur, since I never rely on them.

Huh I'm not talking about skipping the cutscenes. I mean if I need to step away and dont want to miss the story. Dont want to keep the game paused and keep my PC running for an hour or three.

Sounds like a personal scheduling problem to me.
And like I said, there are auto-saves.

if you hibernate your pc, then you can turn it off for hours with the game still running.
