See the thing with Steam is that there is a variety of players and hence a variety of games that reach the top sellers. By the same standard shooters and violent games also reach the top in spite of some judgmental people like yourself. I happen to enjoy variety in my games, although I mostly eroge they can be fairly varied.
In the case of this one I haven't gotten that far, but it's pretty decent thus far. I'm willing to give it a fair shot since I enjoyed the earlier games by Hasoyua.

The former is considered one of the best HRPGs and the latter is a souls-like.
