Crash Checklist
Please follow through the steps below to solve your possible crash and not launching problems.

Please note that crashes can originate from a number of different sources. They might be related to our end or modification you have installed or can be related to your hardware.

Please don't hesitate to use the Crash Uploader every time your game is crashed. With this tool, you can send us the key files we need to diagnose the crash. Please copy the Crash Identifier number. We might need that information in the future if the need arises.

Making sure that your OS, GPU drivers and Bannerlord are up to date.
  • More information about how to update your Windows OS can be found here[support.microsoft.com].
  • If you are a Windows 7 user please make sure that you have installed the Platform Update for Windows 7[www.microsoft.com].
  • Please make sure that your game is up-to-date. You can follow the latest patch version in here[www.taleworlds.com]. Steam will automatically download the latest version. If you are not in the latest version you can force the update by prioritizing Bannerlord updates on Steam[lifehacker.com] and restarting your Steam clients.
  • Please make sure that your GPU drivers are up to date. NVIDIA[www.nvidia.com] - AMD [www.amd.com]- Intel[downloadcenter.intel.com]
Installing Missing Necessary Dependencies
These dependencies are installed through Steam with the first time installation. But we have seen reports confirm that there are some players that these dependencies were missing even though they launch the game from Steam. To installing missing necessary dependencies try downloading and running the following executables:
How to Verify Game Files through Steam
If you are experiencing problems with the game, there is a possibility that some of the game files might be missing or corrupted. Verifying game files through Steam can help you fix most of these issues. If you see broken textures or visual glitches verifying files should be the first action to fix it. You can do it by:
  • From the Library section, right-click on the game and select Properties from the menu.
  • Select the Local files tab and click the Verify integrity of game files... button.
  • Steam will verify the game's files - this process may take several minutes.
If your game is still crashing after these steps, you can try deleting the folders below:
  • Mount and Blade II Bannerlord folder located in the Documents folder (C:\Users\username\Documents\Mount and Blade II Bannerlord)
  • Mount and Blade II Bannerlord folder located in ProgramData folder. (C:\ProgramData\Mount and Blade II Bannerlord) Please note that you'll need to allow Windows to display hidden folders and files to see the ProgramData folder and its contents.
Please back up these folders before deleting. The game will create these files again when launching again. If your problem still occurs at this stage we suggest doing a clean install.

Clean Install
The clean install is removing every single game-related file from your computer and installing the game again. Why do you need to remove the game while you just want to remove the modifications? Unfortunately, some of the modifications do not just add a new modules folder but also change or adds contents to the existent modules folder. Without a reinstall, we can't be sure those files are unchanged.

To perform a Clean Install, Uninstall the game. You can do that by right-clicking the game on Steam Library and selecting Delete Local Content. Delete all folders related to the game that remains after the uninstallation. The folders that might have files inside:
Steam: C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Mount & Blade II Bannerlord
Epic: C:\Program Files\Epic Games\Mount & Blade II Bannerlord
C:\Users\USERNAME\Documents\Mount and Blade II Bannerlord
C:\ProgramData\Mount and Blade II Bannerlord

Note: You'll need to allow Windows to display hidden folders and files to see the ProgramData folder and its contents.

Other best practices
Security Software
  • The game uses a crash reporting tool that may be flagged by anti-virus programs and prevent the game from launching. You should check to see if any security software you have installed is blocking the game from launching.
Microsoft OneDrive
  • One of the reasons the game not able to launch might be the fact that the game can't access the documents folder. One of the main known culprits for this is Microsoft OneDrive. You can try disabling OneDrive and the game can launch without a problem. More info regarding that can be found here[support.office.com].
Launching the game via MONO
After you are sure that everything is up to date and still can't launch the game you can try this workaround:
  • Navigate through the steamapps\common\Mount & Blade II Bannerlord\bin\Win64_Shipping_Client folder.
  • Launch the game through Bannerlord.exe.
Please note that launching the game through this way will disable Steam in-game overlay. You will be seen as in-game on Steam but you can't access the in-game overlay.

If you can't launch the game through Bannerlord.exe and see "Unable to initialize Steam API." warning please make sure that your Steam client is launched

If you can't launch the game through Bannerlord.exe and your Steam client is launched, you can try launching the game through Bannerlord.Native.exe. But, you will need to launch the game through the command line prompt.

Firstly, through the file explorer, you need to navigate into the 'steamapps\common\Mount & Blade II Bannerlord\bin\Win64_Shipping_Client' which can be found through the Steam installation folder. Then you need to type cmd to the Path Bar in that folder. A terminal should pop up, then you need to enter
"Bannerlord.exe /singleplayer _MODULES_*Native*SandBoxCore*CustomBattle*Sandbox*StoryMode*_MODULES_ /anticheat"
command and press enter. This will open the game without the launcher.
  • IF you see a missing .dll file warning, this means that your dependencies are missing and you can download them through our guide here[forums.taleworlds.com].
  • IF you see a crash report after this it confirms that our launcher is not able to initialize in your PC. Please go ahead and use the Crash Uploader to send us the necessary files so that we can debug the issue further.
At this stage, everything related to the game on your computer is deleted. Now you can re-install the game. After this stage please try to reproduce the issue. If it still occurs please use the Crash Uploader and open a thread in our Technical Support[forums.taleworlds.com] boards regarding this issue. Please don't forget to copy the Crash Identifier after you used the tool.
