Why can't I use the tree improvements in the demo? How is leveling up supposed to work?

I don't know if is just me but the load times are too slow for the first time you encounter something new(slow shader caching?), i can play Skyrim and Warframe perfectly fine(stable 30 fps) and Starbound Linux(60 fps) on my laptop low-mid tier. Every ship ran away after refueling at the town and I was unable to attack any of them. Problem is, the game autosaved me with 120ish fuel between my attempt to get to them and my next attempt so there's literally no way to reach any of them after that without redoing the tutorial. Annoying....

when i booted it up and heard across the obelisk music I was so confused. I get it, ya'll both probably bought the same music pack, but it be swell if you at least altered it a tiny bit.
