and some enemies like the mecs and similar u actually benefit from this usually.
There are mods (e.g., "Gotcha Again") that will show the spotting distance as long as you know the location of the enemy (seen by a concealed soldier, or previously seen by one with that ability that tracks, or revealed by sitrep). Particularly useful when you have the sitrep that spots all aliens.
Worst thing? ...........♥♥♥♥♥ like I used to be who didn't give this game a chance, YES the flow is different but meta wise once it clicks you're essentially killing the game on it's hardest settings. Sometimes the "mistakes that turn out good" that the enemy does on the easiest difficulty is something more than the hardcoded predicative behavior it HAS to do on higher difficulties. If you're used to the highest difficulty and need a challenge again, play it on rookie.
My college years were composed of if we can't afford the bar we party it up in bestie's garage! (I was friends since grade school so hush!) We had two older computers in there, one was windows...2.1? The one right befor 95. A snes, a separate tv for MTV and we were getting baked and drunk. You bet XCom was on that computer (the other was a commodre 64 so moraffs dungeons I think.) and we would all take turns if we could be arsed, to play our saves in xcom, play rpgs on the commodore, or gather round and play 4 player mario kart.
Day's long dead, and for anyone young now, might not even be possible. If you're in your college years and can manage to find some fun like that hold onto those memories! They really are precious.

I'm trying to play as smart as I can but I always have the feeling that I am missing a piece of the puzzle in the battles. Like there is some trick in how to play them that I haven't got yet.
Nah, I played it on Normal the first run, was challenging enough. .D
While the game is turn based, the enemy move to cover on your turn is an attempt to balance out turn based and not have enemies stand in the middle of open ground like Rambo.
Also, on the flip side, if the enemy discovers you on THEIR turn, they effectively lose 1/2 a turn. This makes the entire discovery/half turn mechanic easily exploitable to your advantage.
I try to stay hidden as long as possible and get into good positions, but then there is my second complaint I mentioned, the spotting system. It's too unclear where you will be seen or not.
Add a reaper to your mission, and every missions get A LOT easier.
Unless you play with a mod adding Custodians. That... will complicate any mission, even in late game.
Yeah its great game but definitely has its annoying moments.
Good tips. Often though, enemy pods patrol near the battle and just aggros themselves into the fight like some WoW dungeon boss-adds. You never even know they were around.
What difficulty? At Veteran and Rookie I thought there were measures in place to minimise enemy aggro when already in a fight.
