FULLSCREEN SOLUTION

To get FULLSCREEN (if youre pro just scroll to TL;DR)

1. access windows explorer and go to -
C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\The Whispered World Special Edition

-Right-click the file twwse.exe (application)

-Click Properties

-Click Compatibility panel at top (next to General)

-Now select the box that says "Override high DPI scaling behavior."

-Apply, and hit OK

2. Go to your Steam library and play the game, choosing the Visionaire Configuration Tool

-In the Visionaire Configuration Tool, choose your highest resolution next to Window Size

-Now uncheck all boxes (except subtitles if you wish to play with subtitles)

-save and quit and go back to playing the Whispered World Special Edition

Voila you should now experience Fullscreen mode!

Alternative way:

You can also use alt+enter to shrink the game to a small window and then put it back into full screen without the black bars on the sides. However, it lasts only for the current game session and won't be recognized by a video capturing software. It might require disabling the fullscreen option in-game.

Your method didn't work for me so I thought I would share this.

It doesn't work

none of these solutions works, I wondered why when they released a special edition they didn't made it widescreen friendly too

Step 1 didn't work for me, but I figured out another way to get there. Open the proppertiies of the game from the library, click on "local files" (not sure if that's the name in English, but it's the third tap. Then click "see local files (or wahtever the name is lol)" and there you have the twwse.exe. Follow the rest of the steps :)

The graphics are corrupted when the game is run in widescreen mode. They are stretched.

The graphics will be more stretched depending on the aspect ratio of your monitor. It especially looks worse at 3840x1080 resolution.

Neither approach works for me either on my 3440x1440 setup. There is no compatability tab in Properties for the exe file, and using alt/tab or alt/enter to minimize and restore does nothing. I guess if I want to play, it will be black bars for me...Maybe this is why it only cost me $2...heh...
