New Save
Do I need a new save game to play this update?
I'm trying to play with my friend and it says we are on different updates even though we both have the game up to date

Did you install today's update? And your friend playing on Steam or console? Console updates are very slow compared to Steam.

Most of the new content has prerequisites you have to achieve before you can explore the new story and new worlds. Starting a new save will mean you have to go through all the main story lines and the autophage story.

Your results may vary, but the general tone I hear is that the stories are not multiplayer friendly. It is possible to play them together but it requires a lot of hurry up and wait scenarios while the other player does what you just did.

To the extent i works at all, MP works best when you are just exploring without any set goals or doing the nexus missions/expeditions that are designed for MP. There is a new expedition coming up in early February.

Do Not make a new save to play the new content currently. Wait for the new Titan Expedition if you want to make a new save.
