In this game you get a set amount of time at each Island to farm, build, mine and produce items. When you see a warning on the bottom right of the screen that says something like 'A storm is coming' You have approximately 1 day to finish up what you're doing and choose the next Island to go to.

If you take too long to do this, the storm comes (when the moon is red) and you take damage but it will be all over your base. It's like the monsters are all over but invisible. When you are on the move to the next Island the sky will go red, and you will have monsters coming to you from the right until you reach the next island. You need to try to kill these monsters. They come in waves and you will get a warning at the left of the screen when a new wave is coming.

So the best thing to do is plan to move to a new island when you get the storm warning.
