After you complete a certain number of quests, the game will give you one final quest where you can enter the castle for free. Bring a card that gives you an extra AP, and you should be able to attack the king immediately.
For bumping up your stats, keep note of which stat each Quest requires you to use. Regardless of whether you succeed or fail, completing the quest will boost that stat by 1 point.
If you're planning to kill the king, instead of waiting him out, I would recommend you focus exclusively on Fighting and Health stat boosting quests. You don't need to worry about Wits and Spirit, as your final quest will let you enter the palace without needing to do the Peril.
I've won a game as both Elyssia and Zosha by following the tips listed in that video, after having not played the game for a long time. So you should be good to go. :-)
