Have you found a solution in the year since you posted this, or have you just given up?
Side note, another one of Double Fine's games, Psychonauts, had a problem where it would not allow me to save. Took days to figure out it was my windows security that was messing it up for some reason. Perhaps that might cause issues in this game too.
i """fixed""" it changing some options: i've put the native resolution and took down the full screen, anyway still don't know what is the real problem. I'm not an expert, I hope that playing this way will stop the game freezing, so it's correlation not causation.
