I would add that once you see how they set up their towers, you will have a better sense moving forward of what is effective and what is not, and the game should be much easier.
I've beaten every mission without ever retrying more than once or twice. Just look at where the bottlenecks are on each map and place some melee units there. Place a few upgraded gattling towers next to those bottlenecks and you have most of the maps already figured out. Those gattling towers seem to be the best ones when it comes to damage vs money spent. In the later parts of missions you want to add some Tesla towers, because there are enemies, who are immune to bullets.

You don't have to watch whole video, just use it as hint when you cannot continue on your own. Also, TD games are known to be quite difficult and Defend Your Life is one of the less hardcore I belive. :-)
Just got there. I get that you should really work on your strategy for normal and hard modes, but on easy that level is impossible without looking it up. Pretty bad design choice if you have to gate your content behind a strategy guide even on easy...
