"Best Marvel game yet." "It's a large and sprawling adventure, but there's no 'if's, 'but's or 'maybe's about it. Percentages be damned: this is a guaranteed hit for Marvel and strategy fans alike."

The Gamer

"While it's undeniably a quirky mash-up of cards, tactics, and dating sims, Midnight Suns is a focused, well-structured, and fully realized experience. It doesn’t try to please everyone, but if you’re willing to go along for the ride, you’ll find a tactics game that shakes the foundation of the entire genre, along with one of the most compelling Marvel stories ever told."

ACG

Didn't like it much at all.

"In several respects, Midnight Suns reflects the tendencies of the more streamlined, popcorny, and entertaining MCU films. It isn’t what I expected, in a good way. It’s incredibly easy to recommend to any Marvel fan, and is simple enough to pick up and play for strategy newcomers. Although the highs aren’t as high as some of Firaxis’ past work, those of you who latch onto the relationship building, social network, and silly moments will find a lot of joy here: I absolutely wouldn’t be surprised to see Hunter cosplay at future conventions."

Comic Book Reviews

"The game is a true celebration of Marvel characters and their massive legacies, with plenty of references diehard fans will appreciate that are baked into the characters rather than feeling like fanservice. Marvel's Midnight Suns wears its inspiration proudly, never shying away from the absurdity and silliness common to comics, while still telling a powerful story about found families, redemption, and the choices people will make to protect their loved ones."

NME (4/5)

"Marvel’s Midnight Suns is another essential Firaxis title, this time blended with superheroes. Smart use of the Marvel license and some bold choices mean this is essential for turn-based tactics fans, even if the young adult Abbey nonsense might not work for everyone."

"Who knew Sid Meier's protégés had a secret, and completely brilliant, Persona game in them?"

Polygon (recommends}

"Marvel’s Midnight Suns is a game full of rich texture. The voice acting is superb and the abbey’s relationship-building is the perfect chill interlude to the tactically sophisticated card play. The two formats are beautifully intertwined through the accrual of additional cards and abilities, and there’s a genuine sense of satisfaction in deepening both battlefield prowess and social role-playing connections. Midnight Suns is not XCOM — but that’s ultimately its greatest strength. It’s something completely distinct and entirely exceptional."

Grauniad (4/5)

"It’s kind of brave of Firaxis not to just give us XCOM with an asset swap. Midnight Suns is its own thing, combining strategy and soap opera in a nod toward Japanese battle tactics games and the underlying frivolity of the Marvel universe. One thing Firaxis certainly hasn’t done is dumb down turn-based strategy for incoming comic book fans. This is a hugely challenging game, with dozens of hours of play and a narrative that wants to say interesting things about family, identity and sacrifice. Sometimes, it even manages it."

"This is a great tactical and strategic game, in other words, a game in which everything does something useful somewhere else in the stats table. But it's also a great game in general because it is in love with its surface interactions, its friendships and movie nights and sudden blow-ups. It makes this stuff more than superficial due to the love and craft with which it's all handled."

"A superhero game that teases the brain as much as it can tug at the heart, with rich strategy mechanics, great writing, and wonderful characters. A few bugs and visual problems aside, this is a great tactical RPG."

Looks like Steam Deck verification will be patched in, but should be playable on release.

IGN (8/10)

"With Marvel’s Midnight Suns, Firaxis has put itself in the league of RPG developers like BioWare, Obsidian, Bethesda, and Larian. Its innovative turn-based hero combat system takes a bit of time to get going, but once it does it makes excellent use of card game mechanics to keep battles fresh, evolving, and unpredictable over the course of an epic-length campaign – bashing enemies into things for increased damage is endlessly entertaining. The supernatural apocalypse story is given emotional weight by the family relationship between the hero and villain at the heart of it. Building intense friendships with famed Marvel superheroes we’ve seen in comics, movies, and games for decades does tend to feel forced and weird, but learning all their backstories and conflicts with teammates can be intriguing, and the fact that nearly everything you do outside of combat makes you more powerful in the next fight means it all tends to be worth doing."

Gamerant (4/5)

"The worst thing a strategy game fan or a Marvel fan can do is not give Marvel’s Midnight Suns a chance. Midnight Suns regularly feels like a game that shouldn’t be as entertaining as it is because it has some flaws with its presentation, technical performance, and writing. However, the combat system and team-building mechanics are so good that the game can stand tall despite its issues. Firaxis stepped out of its comfort zone and did an admirable job at making Midnight Suns its first tactics RPG game, even if its rock-solid gameplay foundations often pick up the pieces where other elements fall short."

Mid 80's on Metacritic is actually higher than what I thought it would get from these mainstream game journalist. I already see some critique that I had to raised my eyebrows at, like the way ACG was describing the combat, you can really tell he don't play these games much.

Doesn't really matter to me though, super hype for the release, and I would have still been hype if it got in the 70's on Metacritic. Scores are good for the casual players so hopefully this is good enough to convince little Jimmy McTriggerfinger to pull the trigger and give it a chance.

For a new foray into a niche genre, they did a really good job to even get these scores from your average reviewers.

Edit: Wow, IGN actually mentioned Slay the Spire in the review. Alright, good job to whoever was reviewing.

Sounds like it's a success for both Marvel fans and those looking for a new TBS game. Gonna finally pull the string on a preorder.

Skillup

Loves combat so much he still half recommends it in spite of really disliking the Abbey side.

"Simply put, there's a lot here, and if you like the sound of a superhero game that encourages you to stop and smell the flowers before they get burnt to a crisp by Iron Man's lasers, you should remain spellbound for the dozens of hours it takes to see Midnight Suns through. Now if you'll excuse me, I'm off for a picnic with Ghost Rider. "

God is a Geek (9.5/10)

"Small complaints aside, what Firaxis has achieved here is pure alchemy. Bugs notwithstanding, Marvel’s Midnight Suns is the best superhero game I’ve played since Insomniac’s Spider-Man. Not only that, it genuinely breathes new life into a genre that has become uncomfortably overcrowded by so-called XCOM-clones.

That Firaxis are the bosses of this genre hasn’t been this clear since the launch of XCOM: Enemy Unknown. They’ve ripped out the insides of their own machine and replaced it with an Adamantium skeleton, then given it a little hotrod-red for the hell of it. It’s fun, flashy, and silly at times, but also incredibly deep and strategic where it counts. It’s a sprawling beast of game, and once again proves that Firaxis are the undisputed masters of their craft."

I like ACG but this is def not the type of game I would go to him for a review lol

Holy mother of god, look at all those sellouts. ACG has so many points as to why this is soooo bad.

This is gonna be yet another one with users score below half of what the "professionals" gave. I just hope to God the won't massacre XCOM 3.
BaconX 30 Nov, 2022 @ 6:41am
I'm excited that so many people are gonna feel how I felt when I first played Fights in Tight Spaces and Slay the Spire.

Hearing people's joy over this combat system kind of validate my love for them, and to see them in the mainstream is amazing.

He complains about NPCs and characters not being able to run away which seems to miss the entire point of how the battles are done to fit the superhero setting. I hear him on the graphics although they're perfectly adequate. Personally, I understand where Skillup is coming from much more. Combat looks decent with the real beauty being in how it gives individual character to each hero. Abbey side may be hit or miss for me.

What point is that, that the game is ugly? XCOM is not a pretty game either, guess he hates that game too.

The stage is too small? Why would be it as big as oh say.... XCOM, since you guys can't seem differentiate between the two. In XCOM, you have to constantly be moving from cover to cover, so it make sense for the map to be bigger. There is no cover system in XCOM, having a bigger stage just means you're gonna have to chase the enemies needlessly over a bigger map.

Ironman move the same as some random soldier? If they're going for comic realism, none of those soldiers would survive a fight between 3 superheroes, especially those that have magic like portals. Naturally some concession had to be made for it to be a fair video game, with boundaries and rules so you don't break the game.

More enemies keep coming out in waves and you can't run away from them? Oh... you mean like additional reinforcement, like you also see in XCOM?

That was when I stopped watching that video, and already know he doesn't play these games, and from the sound it it, neither do you. I have no problem with him reviewing a game he doesn't much understand, but I have an issue with people like you parroting him like he knows what he's talking about.

And no, I'm not saying that because he didn't like the game. He could've given it a glowing review, but saying those things, I would still question him. That's like saying, "Slay the Spire is an amazing game 9/10, the only issue is the game is too ugly, the character just stand around looking at each other, and sometimes more enemies come in waves".

Skillup I can understand because the whole social aspect is not for everyone, and it just depends on your personal tolerance to some cheesy dialogues or the overly use quips from the MCU. I totally respect that.

I enjoy ACG reviews but he is obviously not a fan of this type game. Besides, he's the outlier so far.
