what am i supposed to be doing

Ideally I guess I need to start again, no idea where the save data is on Linux...

what actually am I supposed to be doing? haven't touched this since it come out I don't think...

Hi, you could start like this ...
It starts as an unstructured puzzle. Read the first page of the manual (ESC on initial game screen gives you a "read manual" option). Open the first puzzle, read the "debug" comment. Try to solve the puzzle. Once you solve a puzzle, more become available. You'll need to read the rest of the manual at some point, probably quite soon.

By the way, the manual is not written as a "how to play the game" instruction, it's like an old-school technical manual, and figuring out what it means is part of the game/puzzle.
