Let me know if you find out because I would love to play it at a higher res.

There is a simple but hardly intuitive option. It involves editing the .ini file of the civ version you are playing (Vanilla / PTW / Conquest).

"By default, the game runs in a 1024x768 resolution. To get it to run in a higher resolution, navigate to your Civilization 3 folder, usually installed in you steam folder (By default C:\Program Files\Steam\SteamApps\common\Sid Meier's Civilization III Complete/ -- if you have PTW or C3C, go to that folder inside your Civ3 one), and open your .ini file (named Civilization3.ini for Vanilla, ptw.ini for Play the World, and conquests.ini for Conquests). Add a line at the bottom that says: KeepRes=1 . Now, when you load your game, it'll use your computer's default resolution."

i can get to C:\Program Files\Steam\SteamApps\common\Sid Meier's Civilization III Complete/civ3PTW but i see no PTWini

I used to install all the games seperately and start them seperately, and I'm a bit new to the complete edition. Try just changing the one in the conquest subfolder (I know that one is there and works, since I have changed it myself) and see if that does the trick for vanilla and PTW too.
Just as an added bonus while you're there, you can also add the line PlayIntro=0 to disable the intro videos (I mean, they're nice and all, but after a few hundred times, at least I got rather sick of them.. ;)

I have the same issue as ben and don't know what Hunnert is talking about.

Ok, I did the "KeepRes" thing and have gotten rid of the "input not supported" thing. However, it now runs cut off at the right and whenever I quit I have to readjust the screen resolution. Any help?

What resolution does your screen have? The game won't run in anything less than 1024x768. Or, well, it might, but it will be cut off. I think you are out of luck if your resolution is smaller than that, but try googling it, I might be wrong.
If you have a higher resolution than that then please provide some more details for me to have any chance of helping. What is your screens native resolution? What resolution do you have to readjust from every time you quit? What computer do you have? What screen? CRT or LCD?

Worked a treat, thanks for this, game looks great now :D

My screen resolution is 1440x900 and I have to adjust from 640x480.

The lowest my monitor can handle without the "input not supported" error is 1280x768.

Which makes sense as stated above, however I can't think of any reason why it would cut off the right part of the screen on a 1440x900. Have you tried disabling the intro videos with PlayIntro=0 (in the same place)? The videos' resolution is low, but even so they shouldn't cause these kinds of problems.. Try googling it, I'm out of ideas I'm afraid.

I am delighted to report that adding

KeepRes=1
PlayIntro=0

to

conquests.ini

works on 21:9 monitors, too. Thanks, everyone! 1024x768 was driving me completely bat****.

I've been at it all night and finally come to the inevitable realization that my little 1280x720 res laptop is just not going to be able to run Civ III. If anyone figures out a way to do it, I'd sure appreciate them saying something, but with x768 being the shortest it'll go, there's no use.

So KeepRes is the main one you can use, but there is another conquests.ini command you could try. There is only 5 resolutions available though.

VideoMode=1024, 1152, 1280, 1600, 1792

Those numbers translate by the game to 1024x768, 1152x864, 1280x1024, 1600x1200, 1792x1344. A bit odd for your laptop, but maybe something will work out.

Yeah, I tried each of those in turn. Each one just makes the display bigger and cuts off more of the bottom and right. The best I've been able to do is KeepRes=1 and the original video mode of 1024x768. I get close, but still lose the bottom inch of the game. :(
