If you came into Rise of the Tomb Raider expecting more Tomb Raider, you'd be right. This is one of the safest, most iterative sequels I've seen, with the only notable addition over its predecessor being a sprint button that makes you slightly faster. It's the same daring Lara, except now she's grown confident enough to uncover a mystery deeply intertwined within her personal history, something her father died trying to find: the prophet, the source and the endless search for immortality. It plays into a bigger theme of mortality, which is ironic considering Lara has since ascended to superhuman status, with the ending setting the stage for her continued battle with the ancient syndicate, Trinity.

It's more, more and some more, a game smothered in the improvements brought by eighth-generation hardware. There's more "optional" tombs, more areas, more challenges and somehow, more collectibles. But ultimately, it's the same experience retooled for a new audience. Despite all that, I liked it less. I feel as if the 'wow factor' of 2013's new tone and presentation has worn off. I've grown a little tired of it, almost.

Rise of the Tomb Raider's biggest sin is its lack of ambition, but it doesn't stop it from being another quality entry. I still had fun, a lot of fun, and ultimately that's all that matters.
