Indivisible is a game I knew nothing about before playing it, but what a great surprise ! A mix of rpg, fighting game and platformer, Indivisible tries something new and succeeds almost remarkably at everything. That's actually the only thing I played that week, I just couldn't put it down. Truth is, I was charmed.

Many gems have rough edges, and Indivisible is one of those. You shouldn't go in expecting a completely polished game that holds your hand through every gameplay subtlety or explains everything you can do. There will be a lot to discover by yourself. There are even a couple of characters that were meant to be playable and act as such, but won't be because the studio wasn't given the time to implement them.
Time that could have been used to smooth out some of these edges. I'm thinking of a few examples, such as a direction to the next objective to avoid getting lost, or the fact that secondary characters' quests would have deserved a little more work to not be basic fetch quests. It's also really nice that running into enemies initiates the battle exactly where you are, but when traps are involved things get a little awkward, leading to situations the game didn't anticipate.

Then there's a few things I personally didn't like. You're introduced to Razmi as a secondary character very early on, and she's here to deliver dry humor throughout the adventure. Well, I didn't like Razmi. I never found her funny or enjoyed her voice acting, but that didn't prevent me from really liking the group of characters as a whole. I also could have done without a certain enemy that one-shots you, we all know how fun one-shots are... Finally, I felt like some of the bosses were poorly designed, with unfun mechanics. Nothing game-breaking though.

Still with me ? That means you're able to look past the unpolished part of the game and get to the good part. And the good is really good.
If the artwork reminds you of a certain fighting game, that's because Indivisible is from the creators of Skullgirls. And it's beautiful. From the characters to the environment, you'll be amazed by the art for the 20 hours it takes to beat the story, traversing the vibrant and bustling cities. The story itself is pretty interesting (mostly thanks to the colorful npcs you'll get to meet) and the voice acting is decent, but what matters the most here is the gameplay.
From a creator with a fighting game background, that was always going to be the most important, and Indivisible absolutely delivers.
Combat happens in semi-real time with your party of four, and it's your job to create combos with the different attacks each character has. The up, down and side buttons correspond to different moves, and by combining those with over 25 playable characters, the possibilities are close to endless. You can make your combos last an absurd amount of time, deal huge damage with supers, heal your party...
This experimentation even feels natural because during the first half of the game, you'll encounter and recruit a new character every 20 minutes, and you'll look forward to every fight to test your new abilities. It's so much fun !

Although combat is easy for most of the story, many bosses can be tricky. That's also true for the platforming, the other main aspect of the game. Fortunately, it's the right kind of difficulty : demanding, but not frustrating. The kind of difficulty that makes you sit up in your chair and put on a serious face, not the one that has you rolling your eyes at the game. As for the final boss... Well it's original to say the least. I say why not !

Indivisible is a fantastic game (or should I say gem ?) with a few rough edges that are definitely worth looking past if you have an interest in platformers, action-rpgs, or simply good games. I'll give it a well deserved 8 because I had a blast. Experimenting has never been this fun and rewarding !
