What is there to educate about? OP posts a loose claim without any sort of evidence or rationale enabling any interesting debate. The hyperbole went both directions.

My take: Most games these days connect to the Internet to report on player metrics (although you can usually opt out where laws require so). Metrics that track what maps players are playing, how long, etc. Typically without being able to tie it to your person (as to not violate privacy laws). If you have a really wide personal definition of spyware then yeah, almost all modern games today are spying on you.

So for those people who are going "Hurp derp no they didn't", back in 2022 there was an update that added Telementry data uploading that has no ability to opt out of. When it was first added, a couple users here had multiple 10s of gigabytes of their data uploaded while working on a map in the editor over about an hour.

This was an update that was out of the blue with no patch notes about them added it and Team 17's only answer was "Oh that must have been a mistake" with no hotfix going to fix it and no further information about it's removal.

Ask Team 17 for the proof because they up and removed the thread. My post history in that thread is gone and every link to it leads to a 404.

But what I can tell you is the individual that DID report it is a well known creator in the workshop on multiple courses, and he has commented on this existing in threads that date back to 2022, shortly after the fiasco.

Did you know that most online games collect analytics about how their game is played and that data doesn't hurt me in any way? I'm collecting data about our discussion right now. Do you feel like this violates your privacy and you will have negative things happen because of it? What if I passed this info on to my friend? Would that harm you? Just by using the internet, your data is being passed through other servers. The question you need to ask is if it is damaging to you or not. Your data isn't worth much because it's useless info. You aren't special.

Terms of Service is excellent proof. Hard to believe we live in an age now where its convenient to roll over and say "yeah its normal" "companies do this all the time" "companies can close my account at anytime without reason or further notice".

It's not always particularly an individual attack on privacy but moreover a collective breach of human privacy. They sell this data to parent companies and third parties. Just follow the money. Personality profiling and human futures. Late stage capitalism which eventually bites everyone in the back. We're seeing it already.

Meanwhile I'm sure most would agree that AI is taking off rapidly and we should be concerned about how this trajectory develops. I'm not saying our data from video games will be used to develop armies of drones or robotics... or that algorithms will imitate or impersonate citizens to create fear or anarchy. But feature creep is a gradual introduction of problems that get worse over time. And if we've arrived at the point where its normal for these companies to spy and collect data for whatever reason they want, then I cannot imagine how much worse it will be in future if we continue with that attitude.

They can get away with it at the moment because they'll paint a picture saying its for diagnostics and improving the game. A video game customers project is a conglomerate's opportunity for data.

And it doesn't have to be about privacy. It's about protecting and respecting integrity.
