The DLC maps are nice enough, some are more liked than other. Do you loose a lot of the game without them ? not really. Especially if you have a friend who already own them since you can join a server playing those even if you don't own them.
I guess you could say they are not great value since there is the workshop... See them more as a way to give moar money to the devs if you feel like they deserve it.
