MC's wife turns up because his wish is to be reunited with her. Sure, he kept saying he needs to get home, but it was all about getting back to his wife, and we know the portal doesn't always do what you think it will.
Presumably, Ancient God split MC's soul in two because he literally needs him to be in two places at once to fix things. Based on the words of one of the nameless NPC's in GoC, the other part of MC was sent to Town (which would also explain why we cannot go there, since this theory means you'd literally run into yourself there).
Not sure what you're asking exactly about who Ancient God is? The Devs made up a god instead of drawing from a specific religion far as we know.
Just completed the game now and I'm pretty sure Leesil is correct that the keepers soul is split in 2. It says one is sent to the Town and the other - the one we play - is sent to the village . It doesn't seem to explain why.
Personally I'm with Leesil though on a lot of it either being poorly explained. I don't think a lot of it is obvious - it's more down to interpretation as I took a different interpretation on some of your others answers too. I guess maybe they mean it to be down to interpretation, or more likely (and hopefully) left for a sequel.
