TO ANYONE UNABLE TO OPEN THE GAME
I was experiencing an issue I've been seeing on here a lot, which is that the game would have 1 unverifiable file when I tried to verify, and when I tried to open the game it would say "updating executables" before simply not doing anything.

After like 3 hours of trying, my solution was disabling windows defender firewall. It's pretty simple on windows 11, go to your security dashboard, go to firewall and network protection, private network, and disable the firewall. The restart your pc, verify the game files again so that steam can fix the unverified file, and then try to open the game.

This was the only thing that worked for me.

Didn't work for me :( I've tried every single online fix I've seen so far, including the nvidia control panel stuff. What do i do now? :(

GOT IT!! If you're like me and you've tried every other fix on the internet and the game still won't launch, give this a try:
1. make sure that in the properties of the .exe file, there is NO specific compatibility mode selected. box needs to be unchecked
2. use steam launch options to force the game to start with 1920p. in steam, right click on the game --> properties, and in the launch options field type in:
-w 1920 -h 1080

I dont exactly know why this worked for me after every other fix didn't do it. My theory is that the game is so old that it has trouble with launching in 4k. It may not even work for you, but give it a try anyways if you like me haven't found a solution so far.

Im playing on the Deck. It didnt start until I opened in desktop, first.

Try launching from the binaries instead of the launcher. Then try reinstalling if that doesnt work.

This worked for me and after launching for the first time, I removed the commands and the game kept working afterwards. It's similar to the solution for Spec Ops The Line, where you need to launch -windowed for the very first time, and then can set Fullscreen after it.

I guess these older games have issues with resolution or scaling or anything in such sense in moderm hardware. Anyway, thanks!

I had to disable my firewall, restart the PC and add the -w 1920 -h 1080 options for it. Simply allowing the app in the firewall didn't seem to do anything. The game works after enabling the firewall again, as it is bad practice to keep it enabled...
