Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night is a masterclass in the Metroidvania formula. The interconnected castle encourages players to thoroughly scour every nook and cranny, uncovering hidden pathways, upgrades, and valuable resources. The combat is satisfying, with a diverse array of enemy types that challenge players to master a wide range of skills and abilities.

While Bloodstained may not reinvent the Metroidvania genre, it does something far more impressive: it refines and perfects it. Koji Igarashi attention to detail, his understanding of what made the Castlevania games so beloved, and his ability to craft a cohesive and engaging experience are all on full display here.

For fans of the genre, Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night is a must-play. It's a love letter to the classics, a testament to Koji Igarashi mastery, and a shining example of how to keep a beloved formula fresh and exciting.

P.s. There are people who complain about the visual style, 3D graphics, crafting system, dialogs, characters, etc. Everyone can see their own, but I have to write a few words about it:
-Bloodstained uses 3D environments, it keeps the classic 2D gameplay and sprite-based character animations. This combination may seem ambiguous. However, it's a skillful attempt to retain the familiar Symphony of the Night aesthetic while adapting it to modern features - I think it's an interesting decision.
-About Crafting: The in-depth crafting and equipment upgrade system is a key element of progression in Bloodstained. While it may seem overly complex to some players, it provides extensive opportunities for customization and experimentation with the game build.
-The narrative in Bloodstained is really minimalistic and focuses more on exploring the locations and combat system than on the unfolding storylines. Dialogs and characters may seem flat and uninvolving to players expecting a more in-depth narrative. However, this is a deliberate design choice, following in the tradition of classic Metroidvania. I don't see anything critical about it.

It is important to evaluate the game in the context of the legacy to which it seeks to pay tribute.

I liked the base-game with the normal storymode. I think they spent way too much time adding alternate modes and characters. If they had instead spent that time on extending or enhancing the base game with its normal storymode, this would have been even better. Instead, half of what they made is pretty good and the other half is junk I have no interest in.

An excellent Castlevania-like made by the creator of Castlevania himself. So, closest I'll get to playing a real castlevania game for now.

I'm not quite sure how to even phrase my thoughts on this game too well other than "it was a very enjoyable experience." It just has all the parts of what makes a good game in a good mix. Good music, good gameplay, good systems that work well with the gameplay, good itemization and gear that leads to a wide amount of build variety, varied movesets and weapon arcs amongst the weapons present. It all comes together to make a great package and is a fantastic example of its genre.

I thoroughly recommend it.

I was excited for this game as I have played almost every castlevania there is, from the famous ones like Symphony of the night, to the obscure ones like Haunted castle, and wanted to like this one too, but...

I'll try and make it organized about why this game is bad:

1. Has many bugs, and as of supposedly "the last patch" it brought a bug that freezes the game. Also according to what I heard the devs don't plan on fixing it because "last patch, game is finished we delivered all we promised".

2. Clunky gameplay and bad controllers.

3. Unbelievable loading screen time. It makes skyrim loading screen look like a joke.

4. Horrible map design and navigation.

5. Sooo many useless stuff that is only meant to try and look interesting when in reality it's all junk and all you really need is few weapons and magic abilities.

6. Very weak plot and story. Now hear me out on this one, I know Castlevania story is simple, like, in most Castlevania's game stories are like "Oh sh** Dracula is back. Kill him!" And you play the whole game without anyone interrupting you (in classic games) or every few hours someone shows and talk briefly and leaves (in metroidvania games). In bloodstained however, you are forced fed the story every few minutes which won't be so bad if it was a story focused game instead of action game and wasn't the most cliche and the fact that there's TOO MANY dialogue in one cutscene.

7. Koji (The man behind this game) clearly has no love or passion anymore and simply used his name to people money to use it for his own dreams under the disguise of making a game for people. Why I say that? Because of many things:
First, the game was released almost 5 years ago (as of making this review) and the stuff he promised people who backed this game, like co-op mode, more playable characters, physical copies and so many more, are either never came yet or were delivered WAY past the promised date. Like, after enough time that make a lot of people give up.
Second, he focused more on doing other bunch of sh** over fulfilling his promise, like doing collabs nobody wanted or asked for nor has it been mentioned before. Needless to say that slows down the completion of the game, like, can't you do these stuff AFTER doing what you promised the people who gave you their money!?
Third, he updates way too little frequent that one sometimes assumes he ran away with half-assed promise and kept the rest of the money for himself. I know making a game takes super long time but not saying a word for MONTHS isn't really a good impression to give. At least show say a word or two to let people know you are still here.
Fourth, As mentioned before, after making the last update which introduced a game freezing glitch he has no plan on fixing the game because he justifies it as "the game finished" and having delivered the last of his promise (after 5 YEARS) he doesn't feel the need to do anymore work than what he is paid for.
Fifth, Never trust people who uses their big names (like mega man creator who made mighty no,9) and ask for money.

And lastly... look at the guy's profile image, it's Dracula from symphony of the nights but with his face instead... WHAT ARE YOU? 5 YEARS OLD PLAYING PRETEND?

But I'm not heartless. There were good parts in this game I enjoyed to be honest. Like:
1. Hearing Snake's voice (although I wish they kept him as Gebel's voice as ORIGINALLY PROMISED)
2. Uhh...
3. Hmm...

It is not a bad game, but it is not good either. The combat is bad, really bad. It is clunky and simplistic.

The voice acting outmatches the visuals by a mile, and this introduces a dissonance and makes whatever happens less believable to the point of comedy.

I would give this game a 5/10 tops. But since there is no meh rating, then negative it is.

I recommend NOT playing it rather than playing. There are plenty of better games, spend your time elsewhere.

This is not a really bad game, but it's not a good game either.

-It gives the same feeling as Metroidvanias; there aren't any real innovations, but is that what we really want in this genre?

-2.5D visuals: horrible, the game is really not visually appealing.

-Boss design: horrible. The boss patterns are poorly developed, unfair, or buggy. The first boss is one of the worst things I've ever seen. Later, one of the bosses got stuck in the floor, and I couldn't attack it anymore.

-The small cameos from other popular indie games make no sense. It seems like they’re just there to capitalize on the prestige of others, such as the name of someone who contributed to the Castlevania games on Game Boy or DS.

it's castlevania by the man himself, so i mean... if konami doesn't give a damn about their franchise then shrug i guess someone else can step in? /shrug

though, i'm kinda miffed that i lost my 100% achievement on this (got it back in 2019, even) because they decided they wanted to add more of them that's locked behind the classic 2 dlc which is Very Stupid and i'm just gonna wait until the dlc is dirt cheap before buying it so i can get my earned 100% back. i'm sure the dlc is cool but 10 dolans after you take my 100% away is bit much.

the base game itself plays like aria of sorrow, but with modern graphics. you kill enemies to get their souls to use their abilities blah blah you know the drill. in fact if you really love AoS you're going to fit right in because this is just. that game. but modern. plot is whatever it's serviceable and just corny enough to be enjoyable.

my other gripe other than the dlc thing is that iga is trying to fit in too much side content in this instead of fleshing out the base game. boss rush and alternate characters are fine. crossovers can be cute - though they've actually got the weirdest crossover choices i've seen, like, blasphemous and shantae sure... journey? kingdom two crowns?? <i>child of light???</i> they are good games but huh... aurora in a metroidvania... ok...

in fact these side content, plenty as they are already, took them FOREVER to implement. when i first 100%'d this game five years back, we didn't even have zangetsu mode even. and for like a year or two something ish they were radio silent, and a lot of people just assumed they weren't going to upheld their kickstarter goals then boom - they started dropping the updates. very, very slowly. (just go back like a bit to look at the older roadmaps they published!)

at least it's now truly a finished game and they didn't flub their promises, so i guess they've got that going for them. if you want to fill the castlevania void in your heart that konami left behind, this is a pretty good stand in.

they said they plan for a sequel but with their workflow god knows when that's coming LOL

This game was exactly what i was looking for! I would recommend this game to anyone.

Único problema destacável que eu vi foi a dificuldade, o jogo é muito facil, fica op rápido.
Recomendo começar na dificuldade 'difícil', se você já joga esse tipo de jogo.
